91 n/a running a little rough
« on: March 14, 2011, 02:46:43 pm »
Just swapped a 91 n/a in to my 84 which was gas. Got it all squared up.

Sat out all day at work today, hovering around the 0c 32f mark. started it up after work, hit the glows for 5-8 seconds and turn the key. fires right off with huuuge plumes of whitish blueish smoke. runs horribly rough, and stutters when throttle is applied. Driving it will make it buck around. Once it gets up in the rpms it seems fine, and after it warms up (my ten minute drive home) its perfectly fine.. I havent got a chance to look at it till thursday, so i was thinking i could compile some ideas of what to check when i get a chance. :)

thanks guys :D

Pretty sure the gp's work fine, car starts at 0c just fine. Its the running afterwards that is the problem lol.

timing set to 1.00mm or 0.39".

Gp's work, car started tonight after work just fine. but then started to run rough.. wayy rough. getting going was a chore. I think it may be an air leak too.. I dont think it is the pump or injectors as they came off a running driving vehicle.

It would appear leaving the Cold start out for my drive (yes I know its bad) really helped to clear up the smoke and rough running. Doesn't appear to be a fuel leak on the feed line, when I popped the hood this morning the feed line (clear tube) was still full of fuel up to the filter..

If the cold start helps.. Could she use a little more advance? I had it timed to like 1.03mm on the other engine but it was old and tired.. Lol I just went to 1.00mm on this one.. Maybe I'll try bumping it up some??

yeah man she doesnt smoke too much under WOT. This car doesn't have a resonator or muffler like the other one did. just a cherry bomb. might just tackle the Gov Mod tomorrow. lol More fuel, with a little bit more advance and maybe up the idle a tad.. should be cherry.

You got any real good knowledge on the mk1 shifter linkages?

i tweaked it when removing the other engine.. think i may have bent the rod to one side. So when trying to come out of R,1,3,5 all the gears where the rod pushes forward under the car, the ball gets stuck in its little slide area and prevents you from getting out of thsoe gears. Been driving around with just 2nd and 4th all week lol

Kinda sounds like you may have tweaked the bracket from the steering rack that holds the relay rod..  Maybe?

it is possible. IIRC it is only thin metal. ?

I am going to address that as well as the running issue tomorrow. ;) Just to make sure I am thinking right here.. if i just timed the engine and know for fact.. the cam, crank and pump are timed.. setting the timing of the pump does not require removal of the VC? and just rotating the engine to TDC and making sure the pump hole is lined up indicating #1 would be firing and then i can loosen the pump and adjust accordingly... Right? lol

So today i bumped the timing up to 0.041" or 1.05mm. Seems to have cleared up my smoke at idle and runs good now.

I also changed my oil to some nice new 15w40, first oil change in 3 years for this motor.. first time running in 3 years. lol Been a parts motor buried under a heap of crap in the very back of the garage for years... Now she lives!

Also got my shifter sorted out after playing with it all day, better then it was before :)
