Oil pan gasket Q's.
« on: March 10, 2011, 08:42:04 pm »
Im currently in the process of installing a new oil pan and gasket on my 1.9TD. The oil pan is a 1.6TD pan with the turbo drain (turbo drain in block has been plugged).

This is the current oil pan gasket (with the windage tray built in), that is on the car. I didnt realize 1.9's took this style as the 1.6's dont.

1.9TD

1.6TD

The question i have is this: Is this windage style gasket completely necessary or can I run a 1.6td, non windage tray style, oil pan gasket? Mostly because I already have a brand new 1.6 gasket from when i had the 1.6, and honestly am impatient and dont want to have to wait for the other style gasket to come in  :P

will it keep oil inside the oil pan? yes
is it ideal? no
but it will do fine.

But the real question is, why use a td pan on a na engine, I am sure there are a few people that would trade you a nice shape na oil pan WITH a new windage pan gasket for your td oil pan..

If the rubber one with the built in windage tray isn't damaged you could reuse it, if it leaks it's not dificult to replace.

Probably a good place to mention that there is a rubber oil pan gasket,
without the windage tray.
So you don't have to use the paper gasket.

Like previously mentioned; Since the seal on the old windage tray is rubber, you might be able to reuse it.

I'm thinking about upgrading to one of these windage trays in my 1.6TD Fox build. Is it worth it?

I want to do this as well but I asked a few online etailers and they couldn't tell me if it would fit because of the turbo pan???

I am pretty sure tons of people have talked about using one on our motor but I haven't found a part number and where is the best deal to get one online?

I personally wanted to get one because there is a 40 miles/day of windy up/down mountains and I have found that on some harder turns and as the oil level drops(i am burning some inbetween oil changes), the buzzer will sound for a few seconds.

Don't know if the windage tray will solve that but I figure anything that would help would be nice.

On another note I believe I made a huge mistake on my car in that last time I had the pan down, I sealed it only with right stuff, no gasket.  Doesn't leak but I don't think I can get it off now :(

toyota engines come factory with the pan glued on, no gasket.

as for the windage tray, no, it wont solve the oil buzzer, it just keeps the cloud of oil circulating with the crank to a minimum.

you need one of techtonics tunings oil pans with the trap doors in it.. they keep the oil at the pickup tube..

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Sadly no such pan is readily available for a longitudinal motor (for my Fox project). I guess I'll save some change and just buy the rubber gasket.
