Downpipe choices AAZ in MK1
« on: March 06, 2011, 11:30:52 am »
I was looking at Techtonics diesel downpipe.

Wondered if there were other solutions rather than $345.00

When I installed the AAZ in my Rocco (mk1 based), I just cut the AAZ downpipe below the oem flexi which was just below turbo. I then made up my own section to mate into the system. It was basically just a 90deg bend, but with a little kick up to clear the anti-rollbar.

This was made of 50mm pipe. You may need to go to a larger diameter for performance, but I am not sure at what point the pipe diameter becomes a restriction.

They have two different DP option's :
Advise what turbo you are going to use :KO3 OR ( same ) t2/t3/k14

You can also order it in 2.50 dia meter and have them make the rest of you exhaust in the same

I had my DP ceramic coated also from a coater

I cut my tail pipe stright as it come from the axle with a 30 s/s bend tip
it cant be sssen from the rear, I get no soot anywhere

If you get some mandrel J and U bends then weld them it is much cheaper than that downpipe you listed. Smoking eddy another guy have a detailed thread about it.

Look around this page to get the hardest part to fab..the outlet.

I think this price is really high for form pipes connected...Here in Bulgaria, this would be cost arround $150

You've only two options: the techtonics tuning or diy so depending on how much time you have, your welding skills and access to tools and materials it may or may not be worth it. I believe the reason the TT piece is $350 is because they have some r&d into it coupled with the fact that they've probably sold like ten units because there really aren't very many aaz's floating around North America and almost nobody modifies them let alone swapping them into mkI cars.

I will be running the OE turbo on the engine.  That is unless someone can tell me there will be mileage gains from running a different turbo.  Oh, and those gains would have to warrant the cost of the 'upgraded' turbo and related hardware.

Yup, the point is that the AAZ engine shipped with two different OE turbos:  K03 and K14.  The two turbos have completely different exhaust-side manifold flanges... so you'll need to take that into account when you order or manufacture a DP.

It's a K03, pretty small.  What do these things do for numbers?  boost, when it comes online and when it tapers off.

Darn it... that's the one that's different from all the rest.  The manifold is a long rectangle.. so the square TT manifold won't work for you.  :'(

It's also probably configured to be "part time only"... look for a second hose coming out of the wastegate that goes to a solenoid valve.

Can't help you with boost numbers except to say it's the weakest of all the OEM turbos by far, although being small it spools a bit quicker than the others.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly does that mean?
