I am going to be rebuilding a 1.6 that I have sitting around. I am going to be dropping it in a 90 Jetta. I plan on making some modifications to enhance the body for aerodynamics.

I have some questions that you guys may be able to answer.

Who has the best price on parts? Rings, bearings, head gasket and such.

Are there any weak areas that I should look at? Rod Bolts or something?

What else can I do to improve efficiency?

1.6 non turbo.

mk1 1.6 n/a doesnt have too many weak areas. unless its an early 1.6 with 11mm head bolts, then you could upgrade to ARP head studs.

more free flowing intake and exhaust systems really help for mileage, and engine efficiency also..

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Thanks man! I plan on porting the intake and exhaust and will also try and run the tublar manifold found on the 2.0 MKIV.

A rebuild in parts is only going to run me about 300, so I am very happy to see that.

since I am building my own 1.6 I may end up ordering these and sell a few sets on ebay.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Oh, the 1.6 is from an 85 Golf, so I am not sure if that is newer or older.

Yeah, I just saw a bunch of stuff on jcwhitney as well.


This is a non-turbo and will remain that way.


I'll porbably tear the engine down this weekend run the numbers and see what I got first.

Use the good quality German-made parts for the important things like pistons, rings, head gaskets...

For more economy-

Reduce the weight of the car as much as possible, remove the spare tire if you want and consider removing the rear seat, possibly replacing it with a homemade plywood shelf to utilize the space.

Don't use a roof rack.

Reduce the amount of rolling mass as much as possible with smaller, light weight tires and stamped steel rims.

Lowering it might help, the underside of the car is not smooth and significantly contributes to air resistance, keep the front spoiler on to reduce the air flow under there.

Really though, suppose a difference of 10% in fuel economy takes you from 40 to 36 mpg, and say you have a long distance commute and drive 300 miles a week, you are looking at a difference of less than 1 gallon of fuel per week, it's really not much of a difference.

no roof rack, I will lower the car, use taller wheels with less rolling resistance, smooth wheel covers, I also plan to have a belly pan, modified hood to deflect air over the windshield, I'll also fab up some wheel skirts to cover up the wheelwell as much as possible. I'll put a vent in the hood right behind the radiator, I may also blank off the grill/headlights with lexan plastic as well as remove the bumpers.

Oh, some air difusers above the rear window to disrupt the air and prevent vortex on the trunk lid.

Trim, drip rails and anything else will be smoothed out. front and rear lower valence will be trimmed as well.

I'll get the engine and trans done, then bring the car in.
