Cam to crank dead on, or was it?
« on: February 28, 2011, 12:23:33 pm »
Hey I just had the fun of double checking my cam to crank for bein on.
My car is a 94 AAZ Jetta. It has the clutched pulley alt. and the tdi CRANK MOD
I remember before i had the clutched pulley on I did a t-belt and checked the pulley and the tdi pulley was hammered even!

Anywho in the fall I had a t-belt due and was in school away from home, so I had to get someone to do it.
He did the belt and told me later that my TDC mark on the pressure plate wasn't on. I asked how he knew and he said he pinned pump and cam and it was off.

I asked him if he double checked the mark agaisnt the crank, and he said no
That left me unhappy, but I soldiered on.

Ever since I heard a tick, bein -30 winter to me it was, cold engine noise. but i wanted to check that mark!
So i opened her up, took of valve cover and pulled all injectors and #4 glow plug and spun motor to 1 TDC
it was off so I wanted to know where TDC on the crank was. Used a stick through the pre-cup and found my proper spot, and lo and behold the crank mark wasn't off really at all!

But now the cam sure was! the pump oddly wasn't? although it can move lots when pinned with a socket like I did.  a 1/2 inch snap on wrench fit perfectly in the cam slot, loosed the cam pulley and turned it to match.

I must note that when I started this I turned the engine by hand and heard a tick.  Valve was just lightly kissin the piston.  afterwards, no more tick.

pop-tested my injectors while they were out.  one I got to piss a stream when I held it close to pop pressure. probably no good, the nozzles were off of ebay, shouldn't have bought cheapos

anywho just sharin my story, the cam wasn't far off at all!
I love the whistle......
