NA pump on abl turbo. please help!
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:11:44 am »
hi guys and girls.
just fitted a complete td abl engine into my t4 and realised when making the electrical connections to the pump that it appears to be the 1.9 na pump is fitted. aside from the throttle spindle leak it runs very well and smooth but a little lack lustre when i put my foot down. i am attributing this to it being underfuelled on boost.

is this pump acceptable to use on the turbo abl? i am not bothered about there being no egr switch as i will blank the egr in due course but surely this pump will not deliver enough fuel?

The 1.9TD pump doesnt appear to have the ability to extra fuel on boost like the AAZ pump has so is it the case that i can just turn up the fuelling on the NA pump to compensate?

i have had a look around but cant find any advice on this matter so any opinions are greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance boys and girls

td and n/a pumps will supply the same amount of fuel..

go look in the FAQ section about how to crank up your pump..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

thanks. do you mean these two particular pumps deliver the same amount? because with an LDA it will deliver more for on boost wont it? is it just that the TD ABL is essentially a bit s**t in its design?

Yes the TD pump with will do a much better job delivering fuel at boost since it reacts to boost pressure, and its adjustable. What ROR is saying is the NA and TD pump both have the capability of producing the same amount of fueling; the TD pump is just set up to deliver it in a much better way.

i see but the stock ABL TD pump has no means of extra fuelling from manifold pressure as it doesnt have an LDA unlike the AAZ. i dont believe the ABL TD pump can deliver extra fuel can it?

the pump heads are the same, therefore, they should supply the same fuel..

Andrew didn't say you or I were wrong, he just said the information is misleading.  The LDA is set up to keep from having to belch huge clouds of black smoke, and worry about dangerous off boost EGTs, etc.  All Andrew was saying is he prefers the LDA for tune-ability and control versus having to learn to drive a non-lda pump safely.

ok so to summise....
there isnt a need for an LDA but without one i will never get maximum performance?
thats ok because i thought the performance was reasonable with the stock ABL TD pump and there's no LDA with that either.
so i can just increase the fuelling a little to get a bit more poke and be happy. and the engine will not run too lean to cause problems?

Diesels don't run lean, but I know what you're trying to say. You just have to be careful with EGTs if you increase fuel by vast amounts.  Install an EGT gauge to be safe. :)
