I used to go to walmart/hell to get the 5qt jugs but they now only sell 1g/3.78L jugs and it didn't appear they lowered the price. Now it's just not worth venturing in to the depths of hell on earth/walmart just to buy oil. I've found bmw, saab and vag coolants are all the same and it's the cheapest at the saab dealer if they've one anywhere near you it might be worth it.

buddy of mine works at advanced...I bring up the oil he says "looks like napa is having a sale and we need to price match" I just smile.
As much as I drive I should have built 2 of these engines and bought a drum of oil

Yes available in 85. My 85 Jetta TDGL is pwr str and its on the window sticker.

A gallon of coolant and gallon of distilled has never been enough in my mk1-mk2 VW's ... but they all have factory A/C. Which usually means a larger radiator capacity. fwiw

Cool... then t-stat changeover is *much* easier:

- with a catch pan in place remove the two 10mm bolts holding the t-stat housing to the water pump
- pull the housing free
- stand clear of a whoosh of coolant  ;)
- pull out the t-stat
- stand clear of the second whoosh of coolant ;-)

WTH?!?!?!?!

That was one of the WORST thermostat placings ever! Took me 45mins to get it in! But not it doesn't leak around there anymore and the temps don't spike.

How many vehicles have you had? It's a little bit of an awkward angle but not bad at all compared to a lot of cars out there.

1990 F150, 1987 GMC Suburban, 1993 4x4 Cummins, 1997 Saturn SC1, 1995 Ford E350,1993 Ford Crown Vic, 1993 2wd Cummins, 1985 Golf. Except for the Ford E350 and the 4x4, I changed all of the thermostats at one time or another. I only have the Crown Vic and the Golf now. The Vic I have owned the longest at 2 years last month. Body is darn near perfect, with 210k miles on it, 3 owner car that my in-laws bought off of a grandma who drove it 30k miles in 8 years. I got that thing for $10 as they wanted to GIVE it away. They claimed no one would want a 16 year old 180k mile car for $500...  ;D

Sorry dude... we have no sympathy... since you didn't have to move the power steering pump out of the way first.   ;) ;D ;D ;D

1993 Ford Crown Vic

:'( :'( :'(  I miss my '98 & '93..    But the slightly annoying oil filter makes up for the T-stat..

No sympathy here either..  You haven't lived to you try removing a power steering pump that hasn;t been touched in 20+ years...
