Bags or struts that go higher than stock
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:37:03 pm »
For a mk3 , are there any adjustable strut/spring setups than can raise the ride as well as lower it?
I'd like to lower it in summer, but also raise it little more than stock for winter.

Not sure if you wanted to go this way, but cant some coilovers raise the car a bit higher then stock?

That's what i figure, but i'm being lazy and just asking if anybody knows for sure, or if there are any brands to look into.

I have found no coilover that could raise the car. All I have been able to find was stock to lower. I think, it has been a while, the only ones that didn't start at a 20mm drop at the tallest was Bilstein which were stock ride height.
Definately let me know if they are making them as I really don't want lower.

I will probably going to use Koni's for shocks/ struts and if i can't find any adjustable's that go higher as well as lower, i will get OEM springs. This is all conjecture as i don't even have the car yet. maybe it'll come with some already.

Would Passat stock height adjustable coilovers go down low? I know a popular mod for raising a Golf or Jetta are Passat struts and springs.

AFAIK passats don't have a front strut and I think the rear springs will work on a rabbit which means they won't work on a MK2.

Moog springs sit slightly higher than stock and they are probably cheaper too.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

pretty sure just fitting an air ride kit would do the job?

I was talking to a mate the other day and I dont know where you get them from but he mentioned how there was a type of airbag that fits under lowered springs around the shock that allow it to raise several inches.

So if you used 'stock' struts, 35mm dropped springs and one of these bag systems you would be running lower for the most part or come winter up go the bags, back to stock height or maybe a bit higher as you know when you jack a stock mk3 up theres way more travel against stock ride hieght before you get the tyre off the ground!

Back springs out of a passat WILL fit in a mk2 car. I'm running a set in a Jetta. Actually cut off about 1 1/2 coils to bring the ride height down a little, Still higher than stock, and a little stiffer too I think.
Running front springs out of a chevette in the back of by wife's mk2 golf, taller, ride fine. Should trim them a littel if they're out sometime too.

It loks like the 78 toyota pick ups airbags will fit your bill at least diameter wise. http://www.sdtrucksprings.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7079
