Fuel pump compatibility
« on: January 11, 2006, 08:07:38 am »
Hi,

I have a spare Vanagon 1.6TD (engine code JX) fuel pump and I have a guy interested in buying it, BUT it seems that the engine in his Vanagon is not a JX. It is a 1.6TD, but the engine probably came from a Golf.

The question is, can he mount (without any modification) the JX pump on a 1.6TD non-JX engine ? I can send him all fuel pipes, bracket, pulley ...

Thanks
nacho

He probably has a non turbo pump in there now, I dont think a A2 (Jetta/Golf) pump with the boost enrichment diaphram will fit under the vanagon deck lid.

He will definatly need the plumbing for the injectors to go with the JX pump, the JX boost diaphram location will interfere with the A2 injector lines.  Also need the bracket on the JX the throttle cable attaches to.

A related question is if the throttle cable and cold start cables will reach....unless his vanagon cables were modified for the A2 pump, they should.

I can take a picture of each setup if it helps you.

Related Q I would like answered.....will the stock throttle and cold start cables on a A2 chassis work with a JX pump?  I have a low miles JX engine I plan to put into my Jetta and don't want to swap pumps unless I have too.  The JX throttle is a little lower on the engine, until I get it in there, I won't know if the A2 throttle reaches.  Cold start looks like it will be OK.

You can see a picture of my JX pump here:
http://www3.telus.net/greenough/images/jxfront.JPG

note location of aneroid, fuel pipes come up the front and over, golf/jetta pipes go where the aneriod/linkage is.  throttle arm is also dropped down the side of the pump -its longer than it looks in this pic, can't see the bend.

feel free to stick this picture on the board, I couldnt see how to do it.

BTW:  I have the manifolds, shields, downpipe and turbo from this JX, might be useful for someone in US swapping in a TD.  moves the turbo towards the front of the van.
