Hello all!
« on: February 18, 2011, 07:08:11 pm »
So I have been lurking for the last month after getting my MK2 85 Golf 1.6D. I have been needing help and have used the search a LOT! Thanks to the administrators to opening this forum back up! I was surprised to see we can register now!

Some history~

I am a 22 year old guy who has been a diesel lover since I was 16. I got my first diesel truck at 18. 1993 Dodge Cummins with a 5spd and 4x4. Loved it and got on some great forums where I proceeded to make it a bit faster. I then went down a dirt road as a short cut and got caught in some fresh ruts and hit a tree. 2 years go by and I get married. I need a 2nd vehicle and got another 93 Cummin but with a auto and 2wd. Made the last truck go from a honest to goodness 19sec in the 1/4mi to 16.01 flat in 4 months. But the mileage never got better than 17mpg around town where I drive 90% of the time.

I traded the truck for this 85 Golf 2dr 5spd and a MK1 Jetta "parts" car. I really regret it for now as in the last month, I have driven it 10 days total. I have HAD to replace the glow plugs, "pimped" the glow plugs for now to help start, new battery, new heater core, WRD's steering and suspension refresh kit, and as of yesterday a newer UN-CUT, 1 splice wiring harness (At the fuel shutdown solenoid) and single round headlight setup.

I have a bad taste for this VW. More my fault for not being more thorough and taking a "guys word for it". Every sensor wires have been cut, main power wire spliced with an electrical twist cap, battery was 1/2 the size and 5 years old. Yeah, a lot of it is my fault.

Thanks again for the opening of this forum!

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you got some work ahead of you.
Keep us updated on your progress.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Welcome indeed..

Don;t feel too bad, you're not the first person to buy one of these cars that turned out to be a mess.. It's rare to find one for sale that isn't anymore...

Max is right, a lot of DPO's should weld handles on their basket cases. Welcome to the forum, we'll try to help out as best we can, and have some fun in the process.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I plan on doing somethings this spring/summer to get ready for the local tracks diesel drag races.

Plans are:

Rebuild/Gasket the 2nd Engine
Port and Polish the extra head
Cam
Port the exhaust/Make new header
Custom intake manifold
New clutch
Electric pusher/lift pump
I/P mods (Lots of history with the Cummins, doesn't look too different)
EGT gauge
Lots of prayer

Photos soon!
