Help, IP leaking can I make it home?
« on: February 04, 2011, 09:44:33 am »
Question for you all,
Im on my way home from a trip, my injection pump had a small drip before I left, and the same when I arrived. Now, a week later, I notice dripping from where I moved my car from one spot to another.  Now when the car runs, the pump leaks, almost as much as the injector return line,  Also, the other day the car stalled at a red light, but restarted when i pulled the cold start out.
Will I beable to make it home 350miles? or will I only make it half way?
any advice will help, cause, one way or another i have to get back home.

86 vw golf 1.6l na-td

Thanks
-Ron

Besides having to stop for fuel several times, how was your trip ? Where is the leak ? Several things can happen depending on where it is. What ever hose / belt it gets all over, I'd replace. If its over the dip-stick, some could have gotten into your oil. Check that. I once had a injector line fracture and I drove 80 miles on 3 cylinders. Man did that smell bad in the car. Used an entire tank of fuel.

Hello.
I made it home just fine.  It was leaking at the bottom of the IP where there is a bolt ,before I left, it was just a slow drip, after a few days in nevada, it started to stream out instead of drip out.
by the time i got half way to Phoenix,  I stopped to at a fuel station (Left the car running) and popped the hood. There was no leak??? what gives? Cold weather? this morning you could follow my fuel trail to the car, this afternoon,  nothing. not even the drip.

Now I have 3 other IP's, 2 na and one turbo.  I know the 2 na's dont leak, im unsure about the turbo, also,  I did a heavy duty cleaning on the turbo pump, I also took apart the throttle springs and scrubed everywhere.  My question on that is,,, Did i screw up the pump settings when i removed the springs and throttle plate? as i could see that the throttle plate has some markings on it after I cleaned all the gunk off. I put it back togeather but I dont know if that bottom plate has to go on a certin way with a certin degree or clocked just right on the little star gear that controlls the throttle shaft. (what I call the throttle plate may just be the spring holder, but it still has the markings on it)

sw diesel wants 400-800 for a rebuild (can I do this myself or do you have to have special equipment )
also does anyone do this for 100 or 200... or do i have to save up for the Gills pump as $200 more seems the smarter way to go.  And, Why does it cost so much to have your pump rebuilt?  A Just Cause I can thing? I only paid $180 for the car....

Other than that,   Thanks in advance
