Can one by change put the old style short tube dipstick tube in the newer A2 1.6 NA block that came with the long leaky one?
Mine is, on top of chronically leaking, bent up to the point I don't think it's showing an accurate oil level, not to mention still not fitting right when the bracket is bolted down.
I assume the old style is press fit and pull pan to knock it out? I have one but it's still in a short block in the shop.
I want to think the bore diameters are different.
You might be better off with a MK2 gasser one. I think those had a splined shaft. The depth is the same in terms of reading the oil level.
With my luck they likely are different.
My main prob, is this long tube has been bent around so much I don't think it's reading right.
Even with the bracket pointing toward the motor, as it must be to be installed, the thing is bottoming on the oil pan (pan not bent)
inside and the lip on the shaft is nowhere near down in the hold in the block. It's jacked up.
I can cut the tube to give it clearance inside the pan, but now I'm not sure how far IN the thing should go, is there a stop in that hole that the lip catches? I couldn't tell last night in the cold and annoyed, will look again tonight.
I've converted all my diesel engines over to later model ("88 and up) shorter gasoline dipsticks and tubes. They tap in reasonably hard and seal VERY well. You initially have to lean them forward (slight bend) upon installation to clear the pump. There are so superior to the annoying wire ones which come in our cars. The dip sticks are wider and super easy to read even when in a hurry.
Install one of these and never look back.
Gray permatex high torque RTV is apparently my friend, also a spare dipstick that wasn't bent totally backwards, somehow.
Now on to my next issue...
On a threadjack, can I ask what genius came up with the black phosphated dipstick to read black oil? It makes reading it a pain in the nose, you have to look at it so closely.
When did they start the black dipstick? Hard enough to read the tiny round one's in metal-color unless the oil is black, mine actually stays clean for a tank or so of fuel.
