G60 Valve cover install

I found a beautiful polished G60 valve cover and notice while test fitting it on my 1.6 TD head that the design causes it to interfere with the metal backing plate for the timing belt cover.  Do I need to get the back plate from a G60 to use this cover?  What about the outer, removable part of the cover, does that have to be G60 also, or can I use my old diesel one?  Any other tricks / swaps that I need to get this cover to work? 

Could someone who's running this cover help me out?

the timing cover and backing plate from a G60 is plastic, and totally different. the timing belt comes off the cam, and goes straight to the IM shaft.

on a diesel, it comes off the cam, runs forward to the injection pump, then down to the IM shaft.

im sure theres a way to make it work with the diesel timing cover.. lots of other people use G60 VC's on diesels.

Thanks R.O.R. for the info.  I guess I need to modify the TD backing plate to fit the G60 cover?  I know it's do-able - somehow.  Does anyone have close up pics of where the G60 cover meets the back plate?  Can someone who's actually done it explain how it's done?

the G60 cover has a kinda almost half moon casting piece on the timing belt end doesnt it?

i think you can grind that off, and re-polish it and make it work.

if Josh sees this thread, he should have a better answer. i think he has a diesel or 2 with a g60 cover..

he will atleast have a for sure answer on what needs to be modded. im not super familiar with that v/c

I didn't have to touch mine. It recesses in that metal plate on mine and won't push it toward the gear...but it is a pain to pull it off. You can't pull straight up and I have studs instead of bolts so it kinda sucks, but doable.
I have MK2 BTW.

On my 1.6 n/a it was a direct bolt-on, the only "modification" needed is either longer studs or as I did allen head bolts. It's possible to use the existing studs but there is very little thread above the valve cover.

my studs were shoulderless. The shoulder doesn't work with the later 1 peice valve cover gasket.

There are a couple different valve covers that are called G60.
 Maybe yours is different than some.

I have a 92 TD 1.6 and like others, did not have to modify anything to fit the G60 cover.  I think if you were able to find a later (88-92) inner shield it would work fine.

that head will have to be drilled for the valve cover..

g60 cover has 8 bolts around the edge, 1.9 has 3 center bolts.

I've never heard of different types of g60 valve covers? Only units from g60 corrados which had a short production run and no changes to the motor that I'm aware of?

Thanks for all the info, everyone.  I will have to get ahold of a later style inner cover and test fit it.  Good to know that others have done it with no mods at all.  That means I can too...

Here is a pic of the cover.  I think I'm gonna paint the lines and VW sign to match the block instead of black.

That does look good . So having read through this thread I could, if I had one;

1. Mount this valve cover on a 1v 1.6 motor.
2. Might be a little tight around the timing belt cover backing plate but if I use screws instead of studs it can slide sideways and off.

Does the G60 valve cover have a one piece gasket available? Perhaps my existing one?
How about the breather "puck" Diesel or do you need a G60?
The cover looks like it has a couple of indents around the breather hole. Are these to locate a G60 "puck"?

Yep, you will be fine using it on your 1.6.

I used studs and it comes off it is just a little tricky. You can't just pull it off, but I like studs to align the VC gasket.

The one piece gasket I use is for the 1.8 8v from 1994 IIRC

I used a 2 ported puck from a 1.9L so it could come from any of these engines I am sure

I am not sure, but I think the indents were for the throttle of G60. They have threads in them for mounting stuff or mine do anyway. With this stuff being 20 plus years old and after my ball joint deal I don't claim to know much of anything on these cars.
