pump timing gauge in inches and not mm help
« on: January 14, 2011, 09:53:29 pm »
I tried to search and know it is here somewhere but cant seem to find it. I have the injection pump timing gauge that reads in inches and am having problems timing the pump on my friends 86 jetta 1.6td. I was using my bentley from my 84 jetta td and didnt think the numbers for the timing would be that far off. If I did it the correct way converting from mm to inches then i cant seem to get the pump in time. The belt is new and everything is lined up like it should be i have all the locking tools. I remember when I had this problem doing my 84 that someone had a picture of there gauge that was in inches and it showed the correct setting. Is there a different setting amount for the 86 pump and what should my gauge be reading being that its in inches?

Thanks in advance.

Not everyone knows this, but Google is great for on-the-fly unit conversions.

Since most folks run their NA pumps in the 1mm region, if you google "convert 1mm to inches" google will respond with 0.039".

Now, if you look thru this HOW-TO:

you'll find a picture of a dial indicator reading 0.039".   ;)

Vince's write-up FTW lol.

0.038"-0.041" is a good area for an older pump. I just time my 1.6TD to 0.041" and it loves it.. It was set a bit low to begin with though..
