MK1 GTD Downpipe Question...
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:58:29 pm »
OK, so i fancy having a go at making my own downpipe for my mk1 GTD project. I've read other posts about the downpipe that needs to be fabricated, but they all seem to be concentrating on the idea of buying one already made off someone else.

Anyways, i'm kinda doing the research now, a few months before i put the engine in, as i'm keen to know what shape it kinda need to be. I got a pic of a mk1 GTD engine, showing what i believe to be the proper VW downpipe for a mk1 with this engine. So from this, i have estimated what sort of line the new downpipe would need to take, compared to the mk2 one i currently have on the engine.

heres a pic of the mk1 downpipe:

and heres a is a pic of my mk2 GTD engine from the rear, with a sketch i did over the top:

and heres a pic from the side - i didn't sketch over it, cause i wasn't quite sure how it should flow form this angle (can anyone assist at this point?)

what do you reckon?

cheers
lee.

If your goning to be making a custom downpipe then I wouldn't bother follwing the origional particualrly, and I certainly wouldn't keep the bowl connector, just go for something like what keith has done

if you trial fit the engine in the bay then you'll see what sort of shape it needs to be to clear everything then just weld it up with a bit of flexi in, you can put a silencer in the system at some point if you wish, but several people run with out and don't have any problems with noise, and I won't bother with one when I get round to makeing mine up properly

Its good to see a couple of others doing this conversion  :D

when you guys are done maybe we should have a mk1 GTD meet?! 8)

A meet sounds good No silencer sounds good in the workshop, i am not on the road yet so can not comment on that yet. The side exit was the easiest route for the exhaust and you can here the turbo on overrun with the passenger window down, cool!!

Yer I noticed that some pic were off. I must look at that and post a caddy update.

Not sure on the intercooler, I was given it but it fits well.

Quite a bit to do, been on with a customer's lotus over xmas, always boils down to money!

hell yeah, a mk1 GTD meet sounds well cool!! i was thinking about putting a side exit on my caddy too, with perhaps a can silencer at the front though, as with the factory one, ain't too sure yet.

Anyhow, i gotta lotta engine work to do yet, especially the governor spring ;) I'm on the lookout for a bigger intercooler first though, and i like the looks of both of yr's guys.

You can see my caddy on my site Here

Hi,

Some may know me from the caddy forum - don't kknow if that's good or bad.

My first post and to let you know I've just bought a GTD motor, it's going in a caddy and I'm having it shipped from North Yorkshire down to North Devon.

I'm reading as much as possible on here to find out what I need to do to get it fit and once fitted, how to wake it up a little!

Keith,

Any chance of looking at your home page pics as well? I tried link but it returned a 'not found'

Cheers all!

Looks like were doing the same swap, my GTD came from CJ in Cullompton to West Yorkshire though.
Logistically we would have been better swapping engines!

I bought one of passenger performances MKI GTD downpipes.

If you don't mind me asking, what did the pipe cost all-in?

LMAO at our motors passing each other in transit!

To be honest I can't remember, I know it was worth doing as Im a crap welder!
Hang on I'll search my PayPal account and see..

£115 delivered, Passenger performance did their bit, the postal service took a while, thunk it got caught up in customs or something. Box was torn in pieces upon arrival, looks like someone had had a nosey en route but I got my parts and reciept in tact so that was okay and I didn't mind the wait as it's still sat on the floor from new year!
They were really easy to deal with, recommended. as e-bay would say.
