Passing CA Emissions with a TDI Vanagon

I recently moved to CA and plan on staying here for a while.  I put an AHU TDI in my 89 Vanagon using AAZ (non egr) exhaust and intake manifolds.  I recently had my 98 Jetta TDI go thru the emissions process.  It was a total visual inspection, they check for, EGR, cat, and make sure there are no fuel leaks and its done.  They did not sniff the exhaust or anything like that.  I am guessing my van will not pass as I do not have an EGR system but when I was living in Montana I was able to get the title changed to "diesel" .  Anyone with a TDI swapped vehicle in CA have any advice ?

pre OBDII diesels are exempt from the biannual emission inspection in CA.
It is possible the DMV agent will want to look under the hatch, and confirm you actually have a diesel engine, sometimes they don't bother.

If they don't accept the diesel title, you will be bound  by engine swap guidelines which dictate the motor is newer than the car, and has all emission parts that it came with-confirmed by a $50 visit to a BAR referee.

What happens is going to pretty much depend on who at the DMV you happen to end up with.
