I'm looking to eventually switch to a 02a trans and am willing to buy a complete car to get it. What years did they start using them? I always thought the AAZ's had them but I think that's not right. Anybody know? Specifically when they used them on diesel cars since I will want those ratios anyways and then I can make use of the engine as well. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but the MkIII diesels seem to still have the 020, while the Passats of the same era (93 up) use the 02A.

Early TDI's got them for sure. Possibly in passats as early as 93 (?? confirmed). Mk3 golfs will not have the 02A's as they never received the TDI until the '99.5 model year. mk3 passats (96-xx) with tdi's, 97+ mk3 jetta's.
02A's are very strong transmissions. That hydro clutch is the bee's knees

All 88-96 Passats have 02A.

So a Passat with an AAZ will have an 02a while any other AAZ will have a 020?

Do you plan on using the hydro setup or the mech. setup?
I'm running the mech. setup on my truck using the cable from a Honda CRX. Its works great.

So what did you do about the clutch slave cylinder?

Just be careful of the vr6 passats from that era also had 02a's but the bolt pattern is just a tad off for the 4 cyl block. Angled slightly on the top two bolts IIRC.

Even a 020 will bolt to a new 2.5, 5 cylinder.
I used the VW early Eurovan mechanicle slave conversion unit. Reinforcing the peddal assembly will be needed.

There really isn't too much work involved in setting up the hydro clutch... And its so much nicer lol
