CV axle removal.

What kind and size of bit do I need to remove the bolts that hold the cv axles to the transmision?
im guessing the nut at the opposite end of the axle (at the hub) is a 30mm.

8mm triple square bit.. for the inner axle bolts.

but its not an allen bolt?!

and an allen bit will mess up the splines of the bolt from my experiences.. i would just get the RIGHT bit..

8mm triple square is what the inner CVs take just like 2.0 said.
30mm is what the outer nut is.

I have been taking the triple square bolts out and putting in regular socket head cap screws. The triple square always seem to be made of something a bit harder than butter. They rarely come out without stripping somewhere. I hate the job so I figure I may as well put some bolts in there that actually will take some abuse. Try it and see for yourself, I am guessing you will love it.

Oh, as a bonus you can pick up an 8mm hex socket about anywhere. Or use a hex key. When you loose or break your only 8mm triple square your hosed.

Okay thanks vincent I used to work at canadian tire in the automotive department and I didnt even know powerbuilt made them.

As I figured, Canadian tire doesnt have them, and would most likley be about 2 weeks to get them. Napa will be my old hope tomorrow.

Sadly I don't think the wonder that is Princess Auto has made it to Terrace yet... but ya never know.

unfortunatley not, not yet at least. Prince george is the closest. But I really dont think my winter beater (89 mazda b2200, with a fake cabon fiber hood scoop) will make the 6 hour trek.  I will be able to check Napa is about half an hour when they open. Wish me luck.

Maybe Ill be able to post some picture of the progress on my car too once I can get the cv axles out.

I second the hex socket bolts.  I had to go to a machine shop I know that carries oddball size hardware, but they are out there.  I think they were 8mmx45.  Cant remember the pitch.  50's are too long, and 40's are too short!  Have had them out several times now and they're still like new.  Well worth it.
