PS pump on serp on AAZ/1Z/AHU??
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:54:17 am »
Anyone found a way to put the power steering pump on the main serp belt on the AAZ 1Z AHU belt setup?

I've seen the euro setup with the ccw water pump, just wondering of anyones bodged together a mount with an idler...

Too bad the ALH bracket wouldn't bolt up...

I totally agree, i'm just looking for inspiration from anyone who's bothered for ideas. I can't really say why I dislike the vbelt setup so much but its partially for exhaust clearance. A all serp setup is nice & clean looking too. so

I might actually be looking into this. I want a lower pressure mk2 PS pump instead of my mk3 one, haven't really looked at how it'll mount up though. I'll *probably* just mount it via the v belt somehow, but I was thinking all serp somehow would be pimp

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

I'm thinking about if mounting the PS pump in the stock AC location will work... It would require getting it as close to the alt as possible & having an adler to get the belt onto the water pump pulley but could be doable... It could be possible to get it close enough to the alternator so the water pump would get as much or slightly more wrap angle as the tensioner; not sure that would be enough though... think it needs an idler...

After seeing a vague reference a reverse scroll impeller & vr6 impellers I got to thinking about this subject again.

Looking at the VR6 pulleys the direction is indeed opposite to the intermediate shaft engines water pump direction.

Looking at the actual impellers:

Soooo... IF you could install the vr6 impeller on to say a AHU, AAZ etc pump,  how would the pump perform with the impeller spinning opposite to stock but with opposite vanes still pressurizing in the stock direction? How much does the pump casting really effect the coolant flow (IYHO)?

What if you built a bracket that pushed the AC comp out about 1/2-1" and that also had a provision for an idler pulley. The idler pulley would sit right in the middle of the WP, alt, AC comp and tensioner pulley. That should give you enough contact around the WP pulley and it would be spinning the right way. I don't know if the serp belt would appreciate the tight radius though.

And for those not wanting to run AC you could replace the AC unit with an idler pulley and everything should be going the right way. You would need to move the pulley in though to enable enough contact with the WP pulley.

I just got a email from INA engineering, they are apparently making a custom cast water pump housing for intermediate shaft VAG engines to allow reverse rotation of the waterpump. $110 including the pump. Who knew there was even a market for this???!

I'd love to see this. I'm contemplating a 1.9 AAZ install into a Vanagon, and would like to use a single serpentine setup for it.

My mistake, they are making custom impellers to replace the stock one to reverse the impeller rotation direction. So basically exactly what I proposed above.

What affect it would have on the pumps performance is my primary concern.

Oh, I thought it was INA, the company that makes roller bearings for German cars. That dude's a schmuck.

The CCW rotating pump housing is quite different:

Unobtanium so no help.

And to be honest now that I see that the stock vanagon dipstick off the back of the pan is pure evil & have a dipstick to the proper spot (made from a mercedes auto tranny snakie dipstick) I can make a oil filler tube like the one you made as it only needs to swallow oil & not be straight for the stick,
