i have a soft spot for chevy 4.3L V6s tho, both gas and diesel.
i would love to drop a diesel 4.3 in my 88 4Runner..

Finally got my service manual for this heap.. Apparently the '81 Cutlass had a "special" glowplug control system compared to the others.. SEVEN pages dedicated to diagnosis of this system.. I skimmed though all 7 pages and all I came up with is "install a button"...

ford constant duty solenoid and a button for it!!
thats how my GPs are hooked up in my rabbit.. works great. might even need one solenoid per side..

The best part is it already has the big solenoid.. Al the GP control system did was kick it on.. Push button connected to a ground.. And the wire to the solenoid is about 2" from the base of the steering column.. WHen they make it that easy to install a button, they knew the system was crap!

Finally got a pump put together for this darned thing.. I wish there were some fun mods to do to these things, not too much out there other than playing with the fuel screw...
The PO of the 6.9 Ford pump had the fuel screw cranked in all the way.. Musta been a smokey bugger... I used part of the head from the Olds pump and made and adapter to put some air pressure to the rotor and push the plungers out so I could measure with the micrometer.. I set the distance as per a recommended spec from they guys at the 350 diesel forum.. (Yup, there is such a thing!).. Just a tad more than stock of course..
I noticed the 6.9 has a slightly different configuration of governor springs.. Weights and every thing else are the same, except possibly the spring in the advance piston.... Gonna keep searching and see of I can find what the difference is.. WOuld be cool if there woudl be some advantage of using the 6.9 Governor...
Now to get a chance to stick it on and see what happens.. Sticking some Ford parts in there has gotta help.. Might cure ALL the ailments of the GM 5.7 diesel..

6.9's turned less RPMs i imagine.. about 3500...
didnt the 350's turn about 4 grand?

Yeah, I thought the 6.9 was done at about 3500.. The 5.7 *could* turn 4 grand, but there wasn't much point in it.. With an earlier "D" block, I don;t think I'd want to...
The 6.9 governor is quite a bit different than the 5.7.. I was thinking about something like the gov mod on the VE pump, but if I'm understanding correctly on how the DB2 works there isn't any gain to be had there.. A larger delivery valve is the route to go on those, and the 6.9 head already has that...

I just pushed the Cutty in the garage.. I gotta say it's a very nice easy car to push.. Could that have been part of the great GM engineering to make up for the engine?
Now let's see how long it takes me to put the pump on... I think I'm going to try a different approach to getting the air outta the system, saw this mentioned a few times on the Olds Diesel Forum, pull the GPs connect all the injectors, crank till fuel blows out the GP holes...

Whoops, 6.9 pump turns clockwise, Gm 5.7 turns counter clockwise.. Gotta swap the transfer pump....

I wish I had a video camera for this triumphant moment... It lives.. And now that the fire is out, I'm gonna put that upper intake back on.. Sparks from the egr port + fuel in the intake valley = bad...

Left her run for about a half hour.. No bubbles in the coolant!!
Throttle seems to respond well, no hanging at idle or crazy smoke, so I must have the max fuel setting in the ball park.. I ended up using the governor assembly from the 6.9 pump.. It has some external adjustment..
Once I get the vac system back in order, and the brakes working, and the glow plugs functioning I'll have to do some road testing and see if I can blow it up..

Got some time today to play.. Replaced all the rubber fuel line, cleaned the tank, got the VW fuel filter and electric lift pump mounted pretty nice.. Not a lot of room under the hood for stuff..
Screwed around with that nutty glow plug system.. My best guess is that the electronic controller is dead.. It does already have the large solenoid to turn the GPs themselves on and off, but simply connecting a button to that posed some problem.. This car has the GM fast glow..
6 volt glow plugs that are pulsed on and off.. Most of the time I could probably remember just to manually pulse them, but to be on the safe side I wired a turn signal blinker in the lineup.. Works perfect for now.. Some day upon a time I may just install the GP control system from a 6.2 or something of the sort..
Now to get some brakes..

yes, it does have HB brakes.. pretty cool if you ask me!
