Late model AAZ injection pump timing
« on: November 20, 2010, 06:57:23 pm »
I've stared at this thing for what seems like an eternity and I can't wrap my head around how the IP is timed on my 97 AAZ.  The Bentley says to loosen the IP mounting bolts and rotate the whole pump but I don't see how that could work since my mounting bolt holes aren't elongated.  Am I supposed to adjust the cam pulley?  The FAQ seemed to be more for the 1.6 and early AAZ with the adjustable mounting bolts.
Help is appreciated

If your pump mounting holes aren't elongated then you probably have the 2-piece IP sprocket with 1 central bolt and three smaller ones around the outside?

If not... hmmmmm.... somethings wrong... you gotta have one or the other.

If so, your pump is  the later version of the AAZ that is pre-timed... no dial indicator required.  You'll see a slot in the top of the pulley where a 6-7mm drill bit will go into a hole in the pump body to set the correct timing.

Basically you:

- get everything else locked at TDC
- loosen the small bolts around the outside of the IP sprocket
- gently rotate the big bolt in the centre until the locking drill bit goes into the hole
- tighten down the 3 smaller bolts

Done like dinner!

Seriously?  So at engine TDC the slot on the pulley and the hole on the IP should line up, then I'm good to go?
Seems fairly idiot proof.  I like it :)
Thanks Vince.

Almost... you'll have to rotate the centre IP bolt one way or the other to get the hole to line up.  As you do so you'll want to ensure the silly engine hasn't moved off TDC.

Seems straight forward enough, I'll just keep the cam lock in place while I adjust the centre bolt.
Another question, if I have the dial indicator in place and take a reading at TDC should I still get the same value as with earlier pumps?  I just have a hard time believing this is as easy as how you've described it.  Kane came by on Saturday and we stared at the damn thing for a couple hours trying to figure out how to adjust it, according to you it was timed the entire time  ;D

You can certainly confirm with the dial indicator, and of course adjust to taste.   ;)

You'll see something in the order of 0.85 - 0.9mm... the stock AAZ setting.

If you look closely at the big nut in the centre of the pump sprocket you should see the classic yellow paint indicating a calibration adjustment.   :)
