« on: January 03, 2006, 11:40:09 am »
blow my headgasket on jan1 well me and two buddys are working on it later that night got the head off all when well. jan2 we are working on it and my buddys down looking how to get to the timimg belt. he cranks the motor.

well my questions are how to retime and motor. crank, cam, and pump?
is that a timing mark on the cam pulley?
and it there a key that hold the pulley from spinning on the cam?

thanks for the help

i'll let the experts handle this one....
but once you do have it timed, just make sure to turn it over by hand first to ensure you have no valve/piston interferance.

He crank the engine without the timing belt on ?

Check for bent valves.

Here a link to do a timing belt of a 1.6 D/TD, it's the same thing on the 1.9TD from 93 to 95.5.

The only difference from 95.5-99 is the timing belt tensionnor, but the belt is the same thing.

Set the pistons to TDC.  You should be able to see the mark on the flywheel through the timing hole.  Good time to measure for the proper gasket thickness (one, two, or three hole).

Put the head back on, set the pump to where the pin can fit.  It might be off, but it won't kill the engine if it's 180 out.  It shouldn't have moved anyway, if it was already pinned and the belt was loose.

The last think you install is the cam sprocket.  Slip the new belt on over the sprockets, including the loose cam one.  Put the camshaft so the lobes are all pointing up, and the slot at the end of the cam fits the retaining plate flat.

Install the belt, make sure you're still on time, tighten the cam sprocket down, adjust the belt tensioner, rotate the engine BY HAND twice around to make sure you haven't buggered anything up.

This is why you unhook the battery first thing, btw, matchmark and take a picture of everything first.

answers:  retime cam:  there's a notch in the back end of it.  If you put a steel bar in there so it fits snug, cam is in time.
retime crank:  take out the little plastic plug in the bellhousing.  There's a notch.  You want the notch with the "0" above it.  There are two notches.  One is 180 degrees off of where you want to be.
retime pump:  there's a hole in the pump pulley that lines up with a hole in the backing plate.  Put a bolt through there (need to find the right size bolt) hold it down, and you are in time.

replace the belt, and loosen the cam pulley when you put the new belt on so it floats freely.  Tighten to 45 ft pounds.  Don't use the notch in the cam to hold the cam while u r loosening and tightening the cam bolt, use something wedged in the cam pulley holes.  Replace your tensioner as well.  Tension till you can just turn the belt 45 degrees but no further with thumb and forefinger between the pump pulley and cam pulley.

have fun
