WTB: Cast Valve Cover for AAZ Engine
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:10:35 pm »
Last week I was in Flagstaff working with Andrew to install the Giles IP I purchased from Vince on my AAZ engine.  Andrew has many toys so it is always fun to look around his various VW buses.  One of his buses has a 1.6 TD with a very nice cast valve cover.  Andrew said that he thought it was also possible to purchase a cast valve cover for my AAZ engine.  On the internet I saw a hint that they were made in Canada, but no details.  Does anyone know where I could find a cast valve cover for my AAZ engine??  If so please post the source here, or you can send it to my PM, [email protected].

Thanks for your assistance.

The cast valve cover on, the 1.6TD engine, would
likely be from a Corrado G-60 engine. They fit right on.

Don't know what an AAZ valve cover looks like.

Well, a lot of help that was, huh?

Yup, it's a "Corrado" or "G60" cover you're after... and as it bolts down with the more traditional 8 bolts around the perimeter of the valve cover rather than the 3 centre bolts on your AAZ some machining of the head will be required.

How did you end up repairing the broken solenoid mount Sam?

Was hoping to find a cast valve cover that was designed for the AAZ rather than having to machine the head to fit a 1.6 style one.  Does anyone know if there is a head similar to the G60 but designed with the 3 center bolts used on the AAZ?

With respect to the broken solenoid mount, Andrew removed the line and plugged that with a bolt.  He then drove a small ball bearing to plug the hole in the solenoid mount.  Sealed perfectly with no leaks.  The Giles IP installed very easily and cranked right up--it helps that I have a small electric diesel pump on the fuel line coming out of the tank.  We had to turn the fuel down a bit as the IP was smoky, although could have been partially due to the 7,000 ft plus (2,100 m) altitude.  The engine is certainly peppier with the new IP.  Mileage on the 300 mile (500 km) trip back to Tucson was 31 mpg (about 13.7 l/km).
