My latest Mk1 - a 1.6TD

Hi everyone,

about a month ago I drove my latest Mk1 Golf back from Adelaide (Australia). Its a 1.6td which starts and runs well and achieved a consumption of 4L/100kms. It is a 1.6 mech TD motor with 65000kms since rebuild and has a k24 turbo. I suspect that this is too big for the motor as there is heaps of lag and as soon as the turbo is doing its thing the motor runs out of fueling. I have installed a boost gauge and it just nudges 10psi.

Last night i drove it to my mums place for storage and although it is puncher than the 1.5D, above 80km/hr there is not much difference. It basically wont go over 120km/hr. Our other car, a 1.5D, runs out at 130km/hr and thats with shorter ratios. On the way the tube that goes from the inlet to the LDA came off. The motor ran warm and gutless till I realised the issue and reinstated it. Would this have damaged anything?

My plans for the car are to finish sorting out the suspension, which was completely shagged, fit the 2.5" exhaust that I have, fabricate a custom downpipe, add an intercooler, add an EGT gauge and a smaller k14 turbo then adjust the boost and fuelling.  With this setup what kind of power/torque would the motor achieve?

No damage, with line off, just possibly better fuel economy.
Should reach 150kmh easily.

The K24 will work fine on the 1.6 - it was a standard fitment.

I've driven one, it wasn't laggy and would push 20psi easily, the boost controller stopped any more.

Give it some more fuel, add a boost controller - then reassess it's replacement.

I think that I should check the cam and pump timing and valve clearances. i wont be able to play with it for a while as I'll be in eastern europe. I'll try to pick up some bits while im there (alreay have 3 k14s waiting for me!)

when i first swapped my td the wastegate was stuck shut, so the turbo would spool up then then bov would let out all the pressure, once i got a boost gauge i figured this out.

I havent had any chance to work on the car of late. I'm part way through a European tour which currently has me in Gyor, Hungary. So far I have seen thousands of Skodas and VW's, mostly Mk3s and a couple of Mk2s and some really nice high end Audis. I have been shocked and disappointed to see no Mk1s until today when I arrived to find a rough 2 door parked outside my brothers house. Unfortunately its not his. We will be heading to some local wreckers to check out the availability of key parts (diesel engines, steering wheels, 5-speed mounts etc) and to the Audi factory for a tour. Should be a nice change from the tourist circuit!

Waiting for me at my brothers place were three k14 turbos. I'll be taking them back to Australia with me but will probably leave 1 or 2 hot snails behind to save on weight for shipping. If anyone is interested in a k14 hot snail and is willing to pay postage costs from Hungary then let me know.

my jetta came with a 1.6 NA originally, and when i got it it had the same issue where it wouldn't go any faster than 120 km/h, and that was REALLY pushing it
the transmission was a 7A
i assumed it was just the fact that the motor made so little power that it couldn't push it any faster than that, so i left it and just kept it at 110 so it wasn't working too hard (speedo said 110, actual speed was more like 95)
last winter i swapped in a 1.6 TD, and it makes some pretty damn good power, but it still has the same top speed
even at it's max speed, the motor is making gobs of power, i can accelerate quickly and hold speed up hill, etc, but it still won't go any faster
and even when i shift into 5th, all it really feels like is another 4th gear, sometimes if i'm not thinking i even try to shift it into a 6th gear, because it feels like i should be going a lot faster

anyways, i'm pretty sure the problem is the transmission and either the 5th gear was swapped with something else at some point, or the final drive is messed up, or the differential is weird and isn't connecting completely
the clutch is brand new and is adjusted properly, holds power just fine, so i don't think it's slipping
at any rate, i'm swapping in an FN soon, and hopefully that will fix the problem

ive heard that the governer in the 1.6td pump cuts fuel around this speed in 5th. I have a 1.5D that will cruise at 130 with a Seat Cordoba gearbox (its a sweet drive for so little power!)
