AAZ into VR6 shell
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:30:57 pm »
i am swapping my aaz (from a wrecked mk3 golf)  into a mk3 golf shell that had a vr6 in it.  both cars have/had  manual tranny's. the vr6 shell still has the shifter with the lines that led to the tranny, along with booster and master cylinder, and pedal assembly.  someone has told me that i need to pull out the pedal assembly, all shifter parts and master cylinder, from the vr6 shell and replace them with the master, shifter and linkage and pedal assembly from the donor car which had the aaz in it.
Can someone further explain this?  also do the golf aaz and the golf vr6 have the same brake booster? i just need to know what exactly i need to do, i need to have this car on the road before the snow hits us big time. also if there are any other things that i need to do that seem obvious to you, please post them, its my first swap and I dont want to mess it up too bad.
thanks for your help,

you dont need to do all that.

Depending on what you want, you can keep the cable shift mechanism and get a mk3 TDI (02a) gearbox. This is good long term, as they have longer ratios. mk3 16V gearbox is also 02A, if you can't find a TDI one. Also, 90's passats with 4cyl engines will have a gearbox you can use.

If you really do want to put the 020 gearbox in, all you need to change over is the clutch pedal. you don't have to pull ouot the whole pedal box.

You might need to be a little more creative with the throttle cable, but that should be easy compared to everything else. If the vr6 throttle calbe comes out at the same spot as it did on the aaz, i dont see why you cant just swap the cable.

I'll just mention that I'm in australia, so everything I have said is only 100% true of RHD cars. I am not 100% certain about hte pedals for a LHD car, but i would be very surprised if it was that different.

The VR tranny is an 02A.. it's got the hydraulic clutch and cable shifters, compared to a cable clutch and linkage shifting like your donor golf has.

You've got 2 choices...
Choice A - 020 transmission. You'll need to swap from the donor car the following -
Transmission
Shift linkage
Shifter box
Brake fluid reservoir and possibly brake booster (not exactly sure)
Pedal box
Clutch cable

Choice B - 02A transmission
You'll need a new transmission... the VR's transmission has a different bellhousing than the AAZ. Some Passats had nice ratios for diesels, even some 16V engines had alright tranny ratios. I've got an ATA right now which is a bit short, but if I can find an ASD or CHA in a wrecker, I can pull 5th gear from those and then it would be very ideal ratios.
VR's pressure plate and clutch plate will work, but you'll need a G60 flywheel... 210mm
I think that's it. It'll cost a few bucks, but IMO it would be worth it. Stronger internals and better feeling clutch and shifter (debatable).
CV's should be 100mm all around, so no issues there.

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

The 02a from my 91 Passat 16v bolted right up to an AAZ from a 96 golf FWIW.  I have since going back to a diesel 02a.

Arent the vr6 02A clutch and flywheel like 226 or 228mm? not 210mm like the 020 I could be completely wrong though.

Ha.. not sure what I was thinking. Yeah, I just measured my G60 02A flywheel and it's 228mm...

just wanted to see if anyone can verify.  some say i need to swap entire pedal box from the aaz golf into the gasser, others say to just swap the clutch pedal.  what is the difference in the pedals and what do i do, entire pedal box or just clutch?
