I understand diesel does not even refer to octane rating, however if im not mistaken you can run diesels on some high octane fuels such as jet fuel. The high octane increases the length or time the fuel can burn for increasing combustion pressures. More pressure more power, more power less fuel consumption for the same amount of work.
