Four Notch Head Gasket
« on: November 06, 2010, 08:00:16 pm »
Did only the 1.5s come with the four notch gaskets or did some early 1.6s have them too?

1.5 was the only engine with 5 gaskets. every other engine got 3 different gaskets, least thats what ive been told..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.

I picked up 2 engines the guy said 1.6 so I got em home and they both have the 4 notch gasket. One has the 12 mm head bolts and the other is  the 10 mm Allen head so I'm thinking one is a 1.5 and the other might of had a new headgasket put in it

how do you know it has 12mm bolts? did you pull one/all of them and measure?

you can use 12pt 11mm stretch bolts on 1.5L engines too.

the 6pt 10mm allen head is a dead give away about an engine being an 11mm block, and having non-stretch bolts..

AFAIK.. a 1.5 gasket WILL NOT seal on a 1.6 head or block.. the front oil drain is far too small on the 1.5 part

sure you didnt buy 2 1.5L engines?

Ya I'm thinking they are both 1.5s. I had a 1.6 headgasket here and I pulled the head on one of them and the oil hole is way smaller on it. Not cool I don't want a 1.5!

that front oil drain is ALWAYS a DEAD GIVE AWAY... thats the only thing i look for really when trying to determine if its a 1.5 or 1.6 engine.. the 1.5 always has a small front oil drain..

1.5 engines are still great tho, just not in a 1.5 block. if you could find a 1.6 block, and throw the 1.5 assy in it, you would have one tough, rev happy engine..

thats probably what im going to install in my dads Tracker, a Turbo 1.5, in a real turbo 12mm block..

I'm afraid you are wrong about dead give away, or notch  v hole compatability. I am using a 5 notch 1.5 gasket on a 1985 mech headed 'single runner' cy TD.  No  issue. It replaced a 2 hole, to give a few thou more room for my valve clash issue.  I have seen over 60mpg since...

ok, well the 1.6 still has the 1.6 style oil drain on the front of the head.. ALWAYS. and its atleast twice the size of the 1.5 drain.. the big lump in the middle of the head, running down to the block...

and i was talking about the gaskets ONLY COMING STOCK in 1.5 engines. im sure there have been more 1.5 gaskets put in 1.6 engines then anyone even hears about..

IF you don't have the different heads side by side to compare, then not so easy.
Easy way for complete engines is to look for the 1.5 or 1.6 stamped on the back of the block....
Well it is for the better designed Quantum Audi range.
I'm not too clear about what you are talking about re 'stock,' unless you are referring to only buying brand new complete engines, because it's certainly unknown what PO has been doing.
Not many off the shelf engines left now is there?

I'm fairly sure that some aftermarket gasket makers mixed up the notch/hole stuff. I seem to remember buying one that had both, but I sent it back because the plonker, sent it in a plain brown paper bag, and the postie folded it ::)

i mean to say, there is no 4 or 5 notch head gasket application for the 1.6 engine. in this country atleast.

they simply never came factory, or were ever intended to have 4 or 5 notch gaskets..

and idk about you, but i can tell the difference between a 1.5 and 1.6 head from a mile away..

the difference between 11mm and 12mm heads is harder to tell tho, cant just eyeball it., most of the time i dont feel like putting the car up on stands to crawl under it and look at the back of the block..

but like i previously stated, i can spot a 1.5 diesel from A MILE AWAY.

if you have never owned 1.5's then you wouldnt know all the little characteristcs that make them so special (and all their own)
