before you buy a auto trans TDI check the timing belt change introval..
some of the automatics have a 40,000 mile recommended change
DOH!
get a 5 speed.. they are cheaper to repair anyway!

You'll get 700-800 km on a tank with auto, whereas with a standard, you'll get 800-1000

I regularily get 850km/tank in town with my 4spd auto 1999 tdi Golf.  1000km in the summer@120km/h+  They aren't THAT bad.
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

I've never had that kind of mileage. I certainly would like to though. Any mods that you've done?

Oh I guess you are right! I am modded a bit.

I have a 12mm pump (thank you Red!), .205's from Smog, and a few inconsequential things like a home made TIP.  Stock paper filter etc.  I do always put 1L of Canola oil in per tank and some additive.  (Usually Power Kleen stuff for cetane and anti gelling purposes).

I have done the Kerma line pressure mod and think that may be worth at best 2mpg, and a heck of a lot m,ore driving feel.  Just using the Quakerstate Multivehicle formula stuff that my local VW mechanics use and like (in the tranny).

My injection timining is adjusted to the upper middle of the graph, don't know if that makes a huge difference though.

Nothing too special.  Also takes into account some use of the Evry mod per tank for the ocassional "smoke out off the arse" and rice rocket destruction.

My driving cycle should be killer for mileage (5km to work and home 5km) and lots of running around small town eastern Canada, but it seems to do well for me.  I do not have a lot of idle time though where I am as the lights are short and the stop signs are roll through ;)
