Will an A3 Auto trans work in A1 Turbo Diesel?
« on: January 02, 2006, 02:28:30 pm »
I just got an 83 Jetta TD with an auto trans for my girlfriend to drive.
And I'm wondering if I could drop an auto trans from an A3 Jetta or Golf into it.
The A3 auto trans is a 4 speed, which would be an improvement over the stock 3 speed auto in there now.

But, I suspect that the A3 trans probably has some electronics and an electronically locking torque converter for highway cruising, which might make this a difficult job.

Does anybody know what the feasibility of this is?
Also, is there a difference between A3 diesel and gas transmissions?

One thing I know is that you'll need to fabricate your own geabox supports... those are different from the mk1/2 supports and even from the manual Mk3 supports.

Not to mention the electonics that could not work without the engine ECU installed and working to communicate with.

you would likely be better off with a mkI or mkII auto box.

I did some more research about the 4 speed auto trans and have come to the conclusion that it would be a lot of work if not impossible due to the computer control.
It would make more sense to do a complete tdi swap.

Thanks for the replies.
