Swapping EGR N18 valve for a resistor?
« on: October 31, 2010, 05:32:09 pm »
Just a thought, and wondered if anyone had done it before I waste my time.
Currently converting a VW T3 to 1Z and doing it electronically.
EGR is going to be blocked off as legally we don't need it here and I've seen the state of several inlet manifolds... anyway, I'm not asking if it's a good idea or not, I'm asking as I want a clean tidy install and getting rid of the EGR control solenoid speeds up the instal and gets rid of the EGR.
I ran a multimeter over the solenoind when it was on the bench and measures 15.5Ω.
I was kinda hoping to just replace the solenoid with a resistor of that value.
I was hoping that the ECU will read the resistance and not flag up any faults, as well, as far as the ECU knows the valve is still fitted as it can "see" it in the resistance down the line.
Anyone a little more inteligent shed any light on this?

The 1Z uses an ECU which knows when the EGR is working/not working when triggered by seeing the MAF value. So I don't think it would work, However there are enough chipped ECU kits out there which just delete EGR function completely- one way to make a TDI make more power and better economy

Seconded.

My understanding is that the CEL is triggered by the ECU not seeing the change in airflow it expects when the EGR opens, so no way to "fool" it with a resistor etc... it's a dynamic condition.

Having said that... some folks swear by the "Narf mod"... elongating the MAF mounting holes a bit and then twisting the MAF in its mount... this dampens its sensitivity a bit... evidently enough to fool the ECU.

If you search for "narf mod" on www.tdiclub.com you'll find all the details.... it's worked for some and not for others.

Conventional wisdom is that the only reliable way to get the ECU to ignore a missing EGR is to have a tuner wipe that part of the code.

Nifty info!

I too will be deleting the EGR as legally the '81 I'm putting it in doesn't need it ;)

Vince, when you say tuner.. Is it just professionals with a laptop that plug in the plug near the lighter and erase the egr part of the ECU?? Where would one go about finding a place to do this?

Yup... a "tuner" takes your existing fueling/advance/boost/etc map and "tunes" it for additional performance, economy etc.  While they are at it they can delete the EGR check.  On some versions of the TDI the ECU has to go in for tuning..in others you rent a downloader/uploader that plugs onto the OBD2 port and simply email the files back and forth.  Very cool.

Having just gone thru tuning myself I can highly recommend our very own Mark Malone of Malone Tuning in Vancouver.  Very responsive, extremely helpful, and the car is completely different to drive...scary fun actually... with absolutely no smoke.

This page:

http://malonetuning.com/?page_id=62

summarizes the various tuning stages available, what to expect in terms of hp and torque, what other engine mods are needed, etc.

Not associated with Mark in any way, btw, just a very happy customer!
