Need help, GTD pump going bad.
« on: October 29, 2010, 04:06:57 am »
Hi

My car is smoking a bit more than it should be, the pump is noisy sometimes, and pulling the advance lever is much easier when I rev the car up a bit. I'm not sure how many miles the pump has, but it is currently set to 1.25mm advance to have the car running properly. It still smokes a bit more than I would like when cold though.

I think the injection pump must be worn. I have a new VW exchange AAZ pump with LDA and cold start lever, but I'm pretty sure this will not bolt straight on. Can someone suggest what I need to do to fit this AAZ pump. I'll get some AAZ injectors and pipes.
Or would it be better to take off the pump and get it sorted out, I have a Bosch diesel specialist near me.

Thanks
Will

You'll need to machine the bracket out to 68mm (I think) to fit the AAZ to the GTD bracket as the pump nose is bigger.

You can simply disconnect all the electrical gubbins on the AAZ pump (if fitted) , you may need to remove the silly immobiliser box to get to the solenoid - this normally means drilling the bolts.

Surely a cold start will pull easier when idle reaches the point when the cold start is designed to have no effect, ie @2000rpm. The lever is only a wedge against the advance piston/spring, and the advance piston is hydraulically advanced.... Or do I not grasp the 2nd principles of pump design  ???
