how to identify correct turbo
« on: October 28, 2010, 02:34:48 pm »
While engine is apart, I want to rebuild the turbo to play safe.  How do I know what turbo I have.  Could it be a T3 or what?

I have a 1984 1.6TD  it is a CY engine.

The tag on the turbo reads
VW P/N 068 145 703 E
Gap 465384 3
S/N LHO 3 0 8 A
1981 VW Caddy
1984 Saab turbo
1974 1/2 MGB-GT

The only references to a ....103... is for an AAZ engine, either Golf or Passat. According to the KATE ;D

Turbomaster says it's a Garrett TAO304. So basically a T3.

Did you go for a 360 thrust bearing upgrade? Are you gonna balance the turbo after the rebuild?

I ordered the complete rebuild kit.  But I didnt order it in any special way except to be sure i got the dynamic seal.  My turbo works, I just wanted to go over it since I am rebuilding the engine to be sure all other compoments are healthy and ready to go.  So most liekly wit will be the 270 degree/
