advance lever - no noticable change in engine speed ??

Ok I just put a junkyard pump on my car - and mostly all went well (car seems to run ok, no leaks, a little erratic acceleration in first gear - beyond that all ok)

The old pump was leaking at the rear where the large block that the lines screw into meets the pump body. Pump was noisey too (didnt realize that til I stuck the junkyard pump in!) Smokin - tho it may have been cause I was a little too advanced (was set to 1.05)

I do notice that the advance lever is a little harder to pull out than with the old pump, and engine does not increase at all in speed when I pull lever out.
I did check to make sure the cable was connected and fully pushed in before I tightened the cable clamp.
outside of binding of the levers on the back of the pump - what might cause this?
I beleive I read once in the long long thread that haggar wrote in that this may be an indicator of sticking/binding advance internals?
Is this something diesel purge might help clean up or is it something a rebuild can only take care of?

I havent checked the return line flow/pressure yet - hope to do so this weekend
Set timing to 1.0, no noticeable smoke either.

Ideas on this appreciated. I really dont want to get into a rebuilt pump quite yet.

Couple of things:

1) Unless you have a later year pump (from 1986-up), you will not see an idle-up with the cold start lever pulled out. The old pumps simply had the timing advance. The later motors added a rod that connected to the throttle lever and brought the RPMs up. The big thing you would notice is how smooth the car runs when cold.
     What year car did this pump come from? I'm guessing it's not a true match for the car you put it into.

2) Your old pump smoked? It if did, it probably was not due to it being advanced.

3) It's not too hard to reseal your old pump. In fact, you can carefully replace that seal between the distributor end (the cast iron part where the lines connect) and the main body (aluminum part). There are some DIYs here and on vwdieselparts.com/forum.

I'll have to look over the pump again I thought it had the linkage up to the throttle.
Perhaps I mangled it while trying to tighten the cable clamp - hmmm. Wouldnt be the first time i did something stupid.

I'll look into the reseal - car is eco diesel and I got a  pump that had the spaceship on it for a little more power.

Yeah, it leaked at the distributor end - I forgot what that was called.

Sound's like you have a TD pump then.

Rev it up in neutral and pull the advance knob, if it's lot's easier then you might have low internal pressure. Compare at different rpm and see how high of revs it stops getting easier. Also shut it off and see how hard it is to pull.

As for resealing these, they're not that hard but it does take patience, skinny fingers, some knowhow and a very clean work area.........

If your car is an ECO then your LDA/Spaceship is merely an altitude compensator. Where does the 1/4" tube enter the spaceship? And other end?

More than likely. Actually, here in the US, the ECOdiesel pump just looks like an early NA pump (no spaceship). After 1987, the only cars sold in the USA with the "spaceship" were 1.6NA cars with the ME motor (1989-1992 cars). So, chances are good that the pump simply has the altitude compensation device (unless you know for certain that it came off a turboed car).
