AAZ vs 1.6td?
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:01:35 pm »
looking to do a swap from my 1.6 NA and i stand at a cross roads as to what has more power potential. now i know i'm looking in the wrong spot if i want "real" power with out spending lots of money, but just something that will get me moving better than the 'ol trusty N/A

just kinda looking for opinions, disscussions, questions, just a general pros and cons of each.

either motor i end up getting i'll be upping the boost, and fuel, just easy mods.

so all in all, who thinks which engine is over all a better one?

AAZ has more potential down the road. It's a nice engine in the light m2 chassis. Plus, you can go mtdi by switching the cylinder head, pistons and building a mtdi pump if you want later. And the 02A transmissions are better than the 020's.

You don't have to change your trans. It will still bolt up to the AAZ.

Well in that case it's pretty much a toss up.

AAZ is a dull lazy sloth of a motor

The 1.6 is fun.

Don't know if you got the 205 GTI or the Golf GTI in both guises?

the smaller motor was always considered to be the drivers option.

Sure the 1.9 can grunt but I dont need that in a small light chassis.

This topic also interests me as I have a 1.6td GTD lump but have often wondered about going for a 1.9td AAZ, never really found a comprehensive list of the pros and cons of each lump though.

For me personally the 2 main factors for the engine choice would be fuel consumption and driveability, I especially like power low down never been a fan of revving.

AAZs definitely have more low end torque. Mileage really depends on your right foot. My 93 Passat gets the same or better mileage than my 85 NA Jetta, FWIW.

so here's what i was thinking. i can pick up a 1.6td with no trans or harness for $80 so i think i might do that, do some general maintance. then up the boost, up the fuel (eventually send it over to giles when i get some cash, summer time perhaps) and that last post got me thinking about a small intercooler possibly.

so with a 1.6 td intercooled, running maybe 10-12 psi, with the fuel up. should run pretty quick? now, remember, i say "quick" in comparison to my N/A
