How do you remove a MKII dipstick?
« on: October 24, 2010, 02:44:44 pm »
Trying to strip my block down before I take it to the machine shop, and I can't figure out how to remove the dipstick. I thought they were just pressed in, with a gasket keeping it from leaking, but this one is being stubborn. Is their a way to do it without resorting to brute force ::)
Thanks
Robert

It is pressed in. Just put a block of wood on the end and tap it out with a hammer.

Mine is bolted to the bottom of the injection bump but otherwise the same. Pull really really hard on it and it will come out.

That is how my past ones have been, for some reason this one seems to be in pretty tight :o

Maybe the previous owner thought JB weld would make a good sealant  :-[.

Mine was in pretty good. It seemed I had to pull and almost straighten it the first little bit and then twist to get it out. Mine doesn't leak around the base though so I think it is a good thing.

I used a drift from inside the block to push it out.

I used a washer that fitted the bore of the dipstick tube from underneath (from the oil pan side) and pushed it up by hammering via a wooden stick.  It is very difficult to get a dip stick tube.  I have a new one that costed about $70.  No junk yard had one.  I have three of those tubes now; short one (block with 11mm headbolt), gas engine one, and a new one for 1985 block that accept 12mm bolt.   Let me know if you wish to buy any of those.  Send me an e-mail at [email protected].

I've made custom dipstick tubes from appropriately sized steel brake line.

Me too!

my 1.5 kept blowing the stock dip stick out of the block.. so i used a chunk of brake line, and like you, made my own. but i made it so that the dip stick actually threads onto the end of the tube..
