head swap
« on: October 29, 2010, 02:13:38 pm »
Hey, gurus, can I put a 1.6 normally asspirated head on my spare 1.6 turbo block? With a turbo on it? This turbo is sluggish-I can get it rebuilt for around 250 usd or should I try aftermarket-I'm not interested in power as much as efficiency and economy-thanks-warren :)

You should be fine in doing that..  Just as long as the NA head you have is the right one for the block.. Since you have a TD block it'll have the 12mm head bolts (early heads had 11mm). There are also 2 different blocks pending on whether you have hydraulic lifters or mechanical lifters..  The heads can be swapped to either block with some modification..

AS far as the turbo, if you decide to source it aftermarket do some research on your source..  SOme of the cheapo ones available are just that CHEAP...

Is the Garrett a good rebuild? I see others talking about some exotics, but I think they are into burning rubber. :-\
