my D24T engine build...

Thought I would share a couple pictures of my engine build going into my '84 volvo. I finnally blew up the original engine (well the HG at least, and the engine was just worn out anyway). I decided on the cat yellow since no one seems to know its a diesel, and the cat yellow has the industrial look to it. Engine has ARP hardware, ported and polished head with 3 angle valve job, NA cam thats supposed to be bigger, MLS head gasket, and will be getting a built injection pump with 2.8mm lift cam plate and 12mm h&r. Here's what its looking like so far:
valve cover with custom "D24" logo I had made up, I was going for the Cummins "C" logo look...

looks good. I rebuilt my D24t about 2 years ago. I wish I had spent the extra time to make the engine look nice. I just put it back in and ran it.

Nice build Jason. Look at all of those head studs! That looks so cool. I'm very interested in how far this 6-cylinder can be pushed. Helps me know how far a 2.0 5-cylinder can be pushed.

Thanks,
I bought the paint from my local CAT dealer parts department. They didn't offer any choice of color... Its spray paint but man its good stuff, sticks to everything and lays out really nice. The valve cover came out nicer than some car paint jobs I've seen! As for how far it gets pushed, once the 12mm head goes on it should get interesting. A couple members of the volvo forum over in Europe have made close to 300hp at the wheels. One guy that I can think of made 250hp/369lbs... I think the limiting factor will be what the pistons can take, some of the guys pushing big power have cracked them. Funny everyone talks about pushing the head off the block, but with studs and the MLS head gasket there are guys running 40+lbs of boost through the D24s... I'm not going to push it to the absolute extreme as I would like to keep it together for a while, its been alot of work compaired to building a 1.6. Main goal is to get the car into the 14s. I was right at a high 15 with the worn out engine, so I don't think that will be a problem. Maybe even a high 13? That would be too good to be true.

I love the "cat yellow" on it. I thought about painting my VW block that color and showing it to those people who have a hard time believing VW made little diesel engines in the first place. What kind of Volvo is it going into?

Its going into a 760 sedan. Came in the car originally. I've changed it to a 5 speed manual but otherwise its still a luxury liner with heated seats and such.

There's a '63 panel van behind it in one pic, and the flames are on my '72 street/strip turbo bug.

That is truly one of the sexiest engine blocks I've seen in a long time. If the big cat filter doesn't give away that its a diesel, the yellow paint should certainly do the trick. Nice work.

I can't wait to get it running. Hoping theres a pretty huge difference in power with a fresh engine. Mine had alot of blow by.

Here's the latest progress... Just need to install the turbo and intake manifold. I think the engine is going to be too nice for the rest of the car!
