my mk2 1.6 gtd has developed a strange running issue. once the engines up too temp i get an intermittent stalling problem. its not stalling in a engine cutout kind of sense, but occasionally when im accelarating all of a sudden i have no throttle. the revs just start to drop and i can push my foot to the floor on the accelarator and it does nothing. if i put my foot on the clutch, let the revs drop to around idle or knock it out of gear the revs return and i have a throttle again.
the problem only seems to happen once the cars up to operating temp, it seems to happen no matter what gear im in and its most common when ive been cruising around 1500- 2000 rpm for a while then begin to accelarate through 3-4kish and will go away imediately if i put my foot on the clutch or knock it out of gear... probably helpful if i mention it had the gov mod (main spring only one) done about 6 months back but i hadnt noticed any problems until now. i'll be taking the pump off soon to replace a broken bracket so my main question would be is there anything i should be looking for while the pumps off or could it be somthing else? any advice would be appreciated.
I would guess you are loosing fuel. Either air leaking in or a clogged filter. It has enough to make power in the low RPM range, but nothing when you need more. Check the filter first.
The good news is this should be a simple fix. If you can do some simple electrickery. What you describe is when the 12v to the fuel solenoid of the pump is interrupted for a moment, the valve on the end of the solenoid gets sucked shut, power dies, then the engine revives once revs drop to 1100 rpm ish and the solenoid can overcome the suction. The bosch solenoids are usually reliable, so check the wiring to it. Could also be a dying ignition switch, common on mk2 Golf. Hope it's good news.
The wiring to it is NOTORIOUSLY BAD!
stranded many many times (last week for instance) because that wire breaks off despite be replacing most of it....
thanks guys. 12v connection on the pump was a bit loose/knackerd. chucked a new one on and cleaned it up and its sorted now. cheers all.
