AFN motors? Looking to buy a car and...

Don't know anything about them. The post says;
Quote
1998 Volkwagen TDI White with black leather interior.

The engine has been swapped out with a European only AFN motor.

The AFN motor comes with the VNT turbo and larger injectors and I believe higher compression. This allows for quicker boost and more power and possibly better MPG.

Your standard US TDI makes 90HP and 149 ft/lbs of torque

The AFN TDI makes 110HP and 173 ft/lbs of torque.

Standard turbos use a wastgate operated turbo. When the pressure exceeds the value limited by the ECU, the gate opens and allows excess exhaust to bypass the turbo.

On a VNT or (Variable Nozzle Turbo), which changes the dynamics of the turbo and allows for quicker spool and also regulates boost pressure.

The motor has around 45,000 miles on it.

The AFN motor is worth around $3500-$4000 by iteslf

What would I look for in a test drive/inspection?

well assuming you want to test the whole car, your typical hard cornering, hard accelerating, hard stopping to make sure everything works and there aren't any nasty clunks or grinds.

For the engine, Without opening it up you can't really tell anything about it, other than how well it performs. That engine should haul some serious donkey. Let the guy know before you haul on it, they tend to get pissy when you just floor it ;)

I guess I was hoping for more of a specific list of typical wear items that I should check, specifically on the motor. Also, is what is stated about these types of engines correct?

Hi, we have these in England. I think I'm correct in saying these were the last and most powerful standard version (110bhp) VW four cylinder TDI's  with the electronic version of the Bosch VE Rotary pump.
Over here they were fitted to mk4 GTTDI Golfs and TDI Passat mk5 (B5) and probably the Bora too.
The engine that replaced this was the PD (Pump Duese)  Different injection system and I think a twin cam head.
If I had a choice though I'd take this over a PD any day, more robust and will run on bio fuels.
Hope this helps!
