New head
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:12:20 pm »
After a lot of Passenger Perfomance built head issues, I broke down and purchased a "new" one. This will be for a '84 TD with some hop ups. Before I start tearing it down to swap springs and port, I figured I would get opinions here first. After a bit of searching, I haven't seen anyone bring up a Q head. 068 103 373Q

Is it new or rebuilt?  Did you paint it?  The mating surfaces for intake, exhaust, coolant gaskets will have to be cleaned.  Bigger issue would be the paint down in the injector and GP holes.  There is pitting around 3 of the exhaust ports and a few spots on the entire mating surface.  The valve cover mating surface has a gouge.  I assume the crankshaft is used, being all worn and rusty.  I would chase any threads that have paint in them for sure.  Other than that, she's mint!

IIRC not a lot of info can be gleaned from the casting numbers.

Supposedly "new". I did not paint it. No gouge on the valve cover mating surface. Crankshaft? Do you mean cam? A little bit of surface rust, but easily wipes away.

Exactly. The suffixes really don't indicate much in my experience. I've seen just about any letter suffix on heads for TD and NA applications.
