Radiator the same from MkI to MKII?
« on: December 29, 2005, 11:41:45 am »
I thought the MKII radiators were wider than the MKI radiators.  But I just took the radiator for my friends '81 caddy (which was sitting in the back of the truck, not installed), and it's an exact replacement for the leaking one on my '91 GTI.  So.... either they are the same, or he had the wrong one.    What do you think?

I suppose I could just go look at his '81 rabbit which does have a radiator in it, but I thought I'd ask here.

It depends on the car... more hp = bigger rad, with or without A/C or other options can vary the rad size.. but all wil fit either Mk

TD's generally have big radiators (not sure about NA diesels), but the '91 GTI 8v without A/C still has the same radiator as you'd find in a later Rabbit. the earlier Rabbits had the rubber mounts at the bottom but in '83 or so they started using the pin mount radiators like the MK2 so they will interchange.

Well, it's a pin mount, so I guess it's not the proper one for his '81 caddy.  I'm happy it fit's my GTI so I don't have to buy a new for it though...

Thanks for all the info everyone.
