Long time no see, so hello to any of you who remember me. 1 1/2? years ago, by engine started overheating bad, on almost any hill, even short ones. I figured it was the head gasket/warped head since it REALLY overheated 2 years ago in Moab when I somehow lost my harmonic balancer while in the highway. It was fine for a few months after I got the water pump turning again, but then suddenly started heating up. Well, I finally got around to pulling the head, and I don't see any obvious signs of gasses getting past the head gasket. Shouldn't the metal at least be discolored if that was the case? Or maybe the problem was the crappy plastic WP impeller slipping on the shaft? I haven't looked at it yet. I do have an all metal one ready though. Also, I was getting a lot of blowby on a fairly new rebuild. I no longer have a manual as i was using the GF's and she is gone.How much piston play can an AHU have? It seems like I can wiggle my pistons an awful lot in the bores, in any direction at that. Maybe that's my blowby problem. Not much of a ridge at all though, which seems strange for so much apparent movement.

I don't remember which engine you have -is it an AAZ or mTDI?
If it's an AAZ, i have an interesting story. My buddy who has an AAZ in his Vanagon has had an ongoing overheating/hot running issue for the last 3 years. He tried many many things, including replacing the block after going through everything else. On his way back from a long trip he decided to check the internal pressure of his IP. Adjusted it as it seemed to be off, and his overheating issues have gone away. This was last summer and since has been able to run at 130 kph all day when he needs to. I didn't believe him, didn't think that fuelling would affect a diesel like it would a gasser, but there was a definite cause and effect so...

Mine is the AAZ with TDI pistons and head, and it was running good temps before the Moab issue. I also run the Evans coolant, which I think has saved my ass yet again as far as the head goes.

story of a idi of mine..

went on a road trip.. good 7 hr away... on the way home it pressurizes the cooling system.. shut it off.. refill with bottled water.. no issue... continue.. make over 8psi o fboost and damb.. my foots getting wet again.. hole missing in firewall and as bottle pushed it out in the hole it came..

stop top off.. still like 100miles from home..

no prob.. hit boost again pressure cooling system...

in old idi engines they will crack prechambers... aka cannot see the crack due to prechamber.. pull glow plug/injector and may see something...

since you got a tdi head.. no prechamber.. but ive seen engines crack the head by the valve seats... since it gives a issue under boost id look in the exhaust ports for a crack.. aka remove valves and start lookign for a clean carbon spot.. antifreeze will clean it :D
