93 1.9 td odd behaviour....

hey all...

on my 93 turbodiesiel (AAZ) came home from work yeaterday...left it idleing to drop something off in a friends house..come back..notice the idle had dropped significantly..get in push gas pedal...does nothing..just idles..

put it in gear...try to leave...stalls.....try to start...nothing first attempt..second attempt ... does the nump bump faster bump till it starts....got into the garage...tried to test today...seems like low power...and after like 5 10 min of driving..if i slow down, itll die,  hard to start again..finally starts....but in a few minutes does the whole process again??

Usually sounds like fuel filter. I carry a spare in the trunk now. Could be other things IP, air filter, fuel restriction, but it sounds like fuel filter

Yeah, probably fuel filter. Is there lots of air visible in the clear fuel line right before the pump? This is usually a dead giveaway, as high vacuum, as from a plugged filter, will pull the dissolved air out of the fuel and cause lots of bubbles in the fuel line.

Being that it's an AAZ I'd be inclined to immediately check the crank sprocket for wobble.... your crank nose may be worn and the timing has suddenly shifted dramatically.

If there *is* appreciable wobble, park the car until you get it fixed... search on "AAZ crank" for all the details.

ugh, theres something i didnt need to hear:).....although, if the timing was off...wouldnt it always be no power.....?

mine runs relatively fine for 5-10 min...then decides its gonna run like crap...it feels like its not getting fuel....

anyway...ordered a fuel filter today...ouch..100 bucks...

anyone near calgary have a spare they want to sell:)

That was my initial though too, but if it were the case, the condition would be constant, not getting worse after being driven a few miles. I'm putting my money on a fuel supply issue, but check the crank pulley for wobble anyway.

ya, and i forgot to mention, my cluster died a month ago (no gauges or trip meter whatsoever)..and before i managed to get it replaced..i ran my poor diesel out of fuel....sigh...

Usually... the challenge with the wobbly crank sprocket is that it allows the timing to change radically and suddenly.... ie the car starts with the correct timing but after a while the timing shifts suddenly and the car loses power.  Turning the car off puts the sprocket back where it should be... etc etc etc.

The more you've said about your symptoms the more it does sound like a fuel or venting issue... I'd just recommend ruling out a very common AAZ failure mode while you're under the hood... one that *could* also be a cause of your issues.

Hopefully all good... but what's worse is not noticing crank slip... until it slips enough that pistons meet valves.

ya, im well aware of the crank issue with these...its going in next mont to get a new sproket and ket and timing belt.....


im just praying its only the fuel filter and not somethig like the ip.....that = $$$$$

well, thanks to all who helped out with suggestions etc....replaced the fuel filter today..and after the first hard start..(15-20 secs cranking) she now runs like a top:)

knock on wood....thankfully it isnt the ip or crank issue..oh and theres no wobble down there either...


so...its due for its timing belt soon...the vw mechanic i go to suggested replaceing crank pulley and key as well as the timing belt and tensioner etc...its a good deal...but will this prevent the dreaded aaz gremlin?
