You can delete it, but you'll need a specific replacement coolant hose, and the ECU will throw a code, so your Check Engine light will stay on permanently, perhaps masking other problems. The only real way around it is to get the ECU tuned to ignore it.
Most folks actually leave the EGR in place nowadays... thanks to ULSD there's little or no soot buildup in the intake manifold anymore, and most people report their fuel economy goes down a little bit after a delete.
Having said that, if you want to install a EGT gauge the EGR port on the back of the exhaust manifold is a perfect spot.

OK, then an EGR delete is not the droid you're looking for.
Unlike IDIs, TDIs respond really really well to bigger nozzles. Brian at Roseland in NS has good prices on VEG .205s and .216s... ship 'em to Giles to have them mounted and balanced and for $350ish all in you'll be roaring.
The car has a MAF so don't mess with a K&N... the stock airbox and filter flow more than enough.
ECU tune is your next best bet after nozzles... Malone in Vancouver is very well respected.. you can ship him your ECU or he'll rent you a loader.

I already talked to giles for some injectors and was talking with TD performance about a programmer, I don't want this poor baby to blow up yet lol. I need to rebuild a motor first within the next few years lol. I had it out for a spin today, some haze on take off in first and she struggled for traction which suprised me compared to I've been driving the gf's 2010 city 2.0 or my 300k old truck lol

I borrowed my friend's 98 AHU , which used to be mine. very easy to smoke the tires. I removed the big nozzles because i didn't want to burn my clutch, but it still has a chip, and even without trying, goes through a set of front tires a year.

I got a EGR delete kit from dieselgeek.com and haven't had any problems with it. I only got the "racepipe" without the coolant pipe delete stuff. It didn't throw any codes. 2k1 TDI ALH

Haha Catlin I am currently looking in to all this same stuff for the AHU swap
How weird, our engines have nearly the same mileage.. I have 423k.. Creepy eh? My intake will most certainly have to come off and be cleaned out as there is a butt load of carbon build up, I'd say about a 1/3 of the intake path is blocked.
Injectors and Malone's Stage 2 (
http://malonetuning.com/?page_id=6
) should be pretty hefty power increase no?

I had malone tune the ECU for my dads 98 jetta tdi. Deleted the EGR, MAF and stg 3 tune. He has helped me along the way and even sent me a spare ECU due to some issues i am/was having.
Haven't drove it yet but will report back.
Catlin, Sam put a PSI box on his dads and it feels good.
It'll haul 2.0ls and AAZs like nothin at all halfway across Canada and midwest US!

Vince says it is not needed, and as you just cleaned out your intake.. I think your well ahead of deleting the EGR..
I was thinking of doing this as well, but a clean out of the intake might be a better idea.. As you stated Vince, the ULSD fuel has a lot less stuff to soot up the intake.
