1.9L 1Y T3 turbodiesel vs. APR tuned 2002 GTI 1.8T 5speed

The question that I have been pondering since Friday morning...
How fast is my new little turbo diesel rabbit with 18PSI and no intercooler?
Is it as fast as a 1.8T? or even better how about a chipped 1.8T?
I found every excuse to do any driving over the weekend and imagined that the rabbit is
probably as fast as a chipped 1.8T... but I needed hard evidence to prove or disprove my theory.

My friend Eric  was nice enough to come by the shop this morning and line up the cars.
He also brought kolachies (we like Eric)
We did a rolling start from 30 and I pulled his GTI by 1 car length thru my second gear and third gear. (30-70mph)
When I hit my 4th gear (approx 70 mph) Eric started to pull on me and we both let off somewhere in the 80mph range.
If we had kept on the gas he would have passed me as he went into his 4th gear.
SO... we have both agreed to linemup again after I get an intercooler on the car
hahaha

I so want to have a TD project car when I get older and can afford to fund it..I would find every way imaginable to have a very fast TD...Of course I'd have to find little tricks you can do to tune them without spending big money.. :D

Maybe even put a TDI in an A1 Rabbit/Jetta Coupe and tune on that. :) That'd be excellent power to weight ratio.

I think the original poster is talking about a chipped 1.8T, which makes a 150hp or even 180hp 1.8T totally irrelevant.

I rode in a 1.8T with a good chip & upgraded fuel injectors and was impressed. I thought I would be unimpressed by the 1.8T's low RPM torque but it surprised me. The torque curve stretches long too. That MK4 1.8T ran 14.16 sec in the 1/4 mile, fully loaded with leather interior. A factory 150hp 1.8T is a slug.. my brother has one. I think they do 16s in the 1/4 mile? No comparison.

Hanging with a chipped 1.8T in a Rabbit 1.9TD is a nice accomplishment despite the weight advantage... that Rabbit sounds to be quicker than a MK3 VR6 already. 14 sec or less IDIs are quite rare.

Mk4 1.8T are around 1350-1400 kg.

Your caddy weigh more than 900 kg for sure (I'd say around 1100 kg).

900kg sounds a lot closer than 1100kg.
i'd put my money on 900-950kg max.
a normal rabbit is sub-900kg.

I rode in a 1.8T with a good chip & 4bar MAP-or-something and was impressed. I thought I would be unimpressed by the 1.8T's low RPM torque but it surprised me. The torque curve stretches long too. Thankyou :)
I was quite impressed with the accomplishment myself!!

It was a APR chipped 180HP AWP engine
that makes 215HP and 249TQ
I so need an intercooler

You talk alot of guff, by the way Dr. Diesel would chew your GTI.   1.8 T's have power, but a 1.6 TIDI with some mods, could eaisly mash a GTI.

If I see an 02 GTI I will surley make it clear who I am, with a nice big cloud of Diesel.

If you really want power, and would sacrafice weight, a VR6 twin turbo charged would be awesome for the gasser heart.

As for diesels, the limit hasn't been reached yet: I have heard of people making 150 hp from a 1.6 NA. It would be eaiser to make 110 hp or more with a TIDI 1.6. with the intakemanifold from a 1.9L head

If it were possible to have the cummins I- 6in the dakota,  , I would be on the buyers list.

How many MPGs?

150hp... that's just frickin' INSANE.

WOW, with a claim like that, you've got to give up some more info, thats 3x the original power of the 1.6 NA....
