replace 1.6 with 1.6 turbo in 82 pickup
« on: September 06, 2010, 12:51:03 am »
Am looking to replace my 1.6 diesel with a 1.6 turbo diesel in my 82 VW pickup truck. What will I need to do that is different? I read I may need to do something with the motor mount since the engine I am looking at came from Germany. Will the current 1.6 motor mount I have still work or am I going on a parts hunt?

Anything else I need to look at? A new or larger radiator? Any kind of wiring changes?

I like the idea of a bit more power but am I buying more problems in the bargain? Different clutch or pressure plate or even transmission problems as a result?

If the Motor is from a MK1 It will drop in, if from another just switch your mounts

Keep the original coolant flange from the old motor ( sensors)if different

Install new belts and hoses , water pump and belt to be safe...

radiator : you can go to the a/c size of 575 mm, i

Or go to the 675 mm 1991 1.6TD model

I have the list of parts:
two hoses
radiator
two brackets

You can use your MK1 fan support ( with either one ) 575 or 675

What I am looking at are the engines brought into the US from Germany by the California company. They sell a lot of them.

Am looking at two options. The 1.6 turbo or the 1.6 naturally aspirated with hydraulic lifters. The turbo costs more.

Is the Turbo that much better for an 82 Caddy than the regular engine?

Another possibility is the 1.9 engine without a turbo. But I have been told parts are hard to come by if I need anything. So, based on that I am not looking to hard at it.

Will the turbo really be worth it?

get the 1.9 AAZ , non egr model if you can

parts are easy to find

I will help with your install....

I went from gas to diesel , yours is easier

Who is the importer ?

GB

Switch the coolant flanges from the 1.6 and the engine mounts from the 1.6
Purchase a downpipe and a complete 2.25 or 2.50 exhaust
I have a K&N RX4860 airfilter assy that will match up to the air filter snorkel
Done
