What 1.6TD turbo do I have?
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:43:25 pm »

I bought a complete 1.6TD turbo kit from a 1984 rabbit.   I already bolted all the part to the 1986 1.6NA engine in my caddy except for the turbo IP and turbo injectors.  I also have a Giles pump that I'll install later.

This is what my turbo looks like.  It says Garrett and Airesearch on it.

So is this a Garrett T2 instead of a K24?

My caddy is running fine with a bit more power.  This turbo whistles quite a lot, is this normal?  Also my oil pressure LED  is half way lit now when driving.   Is this because the quite a bit of oil is diverted to the turbo so there's lower pressure to the head when the oil warning sensor is located?  What can I do about this so the the oil light goes off normally?

The oil situation could be bad if it really is low pressure. The best would probably be buy a new oil pump off of Myke W the mod on this board that has the 36mm gears. I would hook a pressure gauge to it and see what pressure you really have first. You could try a thicker oil if you aren't already running thick stuff.

I do have a full set of VDO gauges.  However I don't have an oil pressure and oil temp sender from a cabriolet to hook them up.  The oil warning light went off normally before I bolted on all the 1.6TD parts.  I only went around the block a little bit afterwards but won't drive it anymore until I get an idea what the oil pressure really is.   My engine currently have Mobil 1 15-40w and a Purolator oil filter.

Well my oil pressure is fine.  Tested both oil pressure senders with a multimeter  with and without the engine running.  The one on the head is normally closed and opens up at 0.3 bar.  The one of the oil filter mount is normally open and closes at 1.8  bar.  I probably messed up the oil warning system when air got into the fuel system and the caddy wouldn't start after installing the 1.6TD stuff. While troubleshooting I temporarily apply power to the solenoid on the IP.  Maybe that's messed up something.

Anyways back to the Garret T3 turbo.  How many psi is it good for if i disable the blow off valve?  I have a 1.6TD Giles pump and a Porsche 944 intercooler I might use.

air in the fuel system has nothing to do with your oil pressure system functioning correctly or not. did you hook a mechanical gauge up to the engine? the VW senders are just switches, not variable resistance senders like a gauge uses. if you didnt hook up a mechanical gauge, i wouldnt believe that it has oil pressure.

and a T3 turbo will make upwards towards 40 psi boost, it wont be efficient, but it will do it. the BOV opens at 15 psi. 20-25 psi will be real fun, and still have the turbo be efficient.
