A few issues after the govenor mod... a little help please
« on: December 25, 2005, 11:36:42 pm »
Well, today I decided to takle the govenor mod...

But after putting the pump back together I've been having a few issues...

One being that it seems to be holding the revvs...

Now one thing you have to know is that I cannot set the pump timing properly... I don't have the timing tool... So I decided to retard the timing a touch (twice) and that somewhat helped the holding...

It only seems to do it in the upper RPMs... meaning that the higher you revv the car, the more it'll hold it...

I did get it to the point where it doesn't hold the revvs, but the higher you rev the longer it takes to get back down to idle.

The govenor mod was done by removing all of the intermediate spring movement, and by pre-loading the main spring by about 0.25"...

Also if I adjust the max fuel screw on the side (add more fuel) it seems to get worse...

I know there are a lot of variables of what it could be... but any help would be great... i don't even know where to look really...

Merry christmas!!  :)

merry xmas!  im no pump expert, but it sounds to me like some residual fueling going on.

does this help?
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2675&highlight=residual

supposedly its the screw on the drivers side of the pump.

i think whats happening is that the car is giving more fuel a lot quicker with this mod, so when you let off the pedal its still getting a high quantity of diesel so the rpms are staying high, while the residual fuel is being given as to not stall the motor on deceleration.  if that doesnt sound right.. its probably because i have a few xmas drinks in me and its woa 4:52am here lol  goodnight errr morning!!!!

Yea, I know what screw you're talking about....

I tried playing around with the residual fuel screw... like I said, it seems to get worse when I add more fuel, and better if I take some away... But I don't know how much to take away (or add)...   I guess until the revvs drop properly?

Also, I backed off the pump timing as well which helped... but all in all after this my car seems slower then when the govenor was stock... lol...

The only thing I do notice is that the boost doesn't fall off once ~4200 RPM comes around... it keeps up the 9 psi all the way past 5000 RPM... so I'm guessing the govenor mod is working, it's just the residual fuel screw and timing that may need to be worked out?

I've had this problem in the past and I know how irritating it is.  I'll try to explain it with the smog mod pictures.

You need to back off #6 until the revs come down normally, then you need to adjust the idle back to where you want it with #7 and #8.  The adjustment process for #7 and #8 are explained in the bentley, if you don't have one or need help with that just post back here or im me.  If you can back #6 all the way out and the revs still don't return naturally your throttle shaft is off one tooth.  Hope this helps

^^^ Hey thanks a lot!

Funny thing, I actually did that about 1.5 hours ago even before reading u'r post... then came in to see your reply, and it was exactly what I had to do.

I backed off #6 little by little till I noticed a difference, and the revvs were dropping a lot faster... I then put the max fuel screw (#5) to approx where I had it before... and used #7 to get the car to idle just right...

The car run GREAT now... It took me quite a few test runs to get all the fuel settings dialed in well... (like low boost fuel, the star wheel, max fuel, etc)...  but now it runs well, and just get a slight haze coming out the exhaust under 1/2-3/4 throttle, and a little more under full throttle.

I'm still going to have to drive the car a little easier tho, because again I don't have the pump dialed in yet, and don't have an EGT guage yet so I don't know where I am with that.  Hopefully next week I'll have the EGT and pump timing tool and can tune it little better.

Other then that, I'm very happy with the govenor mod... It works very well and the car is VERY resonsive now and quite a bit faster...  I'm sure I can get some more out of it once i have the proper tools mentioned above, as my 1.9L 2 spring injectors need to have the pump advanced to 1.00mm...

Thanks for the help!  I was worried that I didn't do something correctly, but took my time and even took a few pics a long the way so maybe the FAQ/DIY thread for that mod can be updated with some more detailed pics!  :)
