More fuel economy/pump questions
« on: December 22, 2005, 04:23:06 pm »
I have an 86 TD it has 345kms on the clock the motor has been rebuilt at some point but im not sure exactly when.  The car runs good and strong I have the car straight piped and a k&n in it with the box drilled out.  I drive this car hard with most of my miles on the hi-way right now im getting about 500km to a tank.  The car seems to smoke all the time but more of course  when my foot is in to it.  When I drive on the hi-way I cruise at 140km at 3400rpm I have tried to slow down even to around 2900rpm on the hi-way and I still only gained 80km per tank.  So I think my problem is from the car over fueling is there a simple adjustment that I can make on the pump.  And can anyone show me a picture of how to do it.

Look under header 'Adjustment of Fueling' here [link]. Simply put: Reduce fuel quantity by turning respective screw counter-clockwise. Raise idle RPM by turning respective screw clockwise. The pictures in the thread I linked show where these screws are.

Do you have a Bentley manual for your VW? There's instructions in there as well to adjust fueling.

How's the condition of your TD? Good startup in cold? Runs smooth? Injectors spraying to spec? Good fuel pump timing? No white/blue smoke? Tires inflated well? Fuel filter is up to date?
