bigger bore on a 1.6L
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:32:16 am »
Is it possible to make a 1.9l of a 1.6 ?
Here in belgium no motor swaps are allowed so i have to keep the 1.6 td block (they check the numbers on the block during annual inspection)
I will need aaz engine for the head, pistons, crank and rods then bore the 1.6 from 76.5 to 79.5mm.

I ask this because i dont have a aaz block to compare things...

Also do aaz pistons fit the 1.6 rods ? with just swapping pistons and a bore do i get an 1.7l engine ? that seems even better because it will rev even faster then a 1.6 and have more power available no ?

1,9 block is 16mm taller, con rods will not work.

You could use 1,9 NA pistons, or try find 1,7 pistons (rare) to make 1,7 engine. These both have 24mm pin, 1,9TD has 26mm pin. 1,9NA piston is a little lower, but you can cut the block to get compression right.

i heard 1.7s make the walls too thin, i dunno for sure tho, but i bet if youd go with a ported 1.9 head, a giles pump, and a newer better turbo, you'd be just as happy.

Just did some searching,1.7 pistons have 79.5 bore by 86.4 stroke, the pin matches so this is my only option...
i doubd the 100cc extra will make a differcence,so the cost of boring and new pistons will be better spend in a better turbo and cooler

The pistons are available on german ebay in case anyone needs them search ''vw bus t3 kolben'' for +-300 euro/set they are overbore's though

:trev0rbr: ported aaz head is sitting at my desk waiting for the stock headgasket to blow so i can replace the head while i'm in there  ;D
The giles pump i can only dream off,i have read about a guy from the french section the pump cost him around 2000$ after schipping/ import taxes to france !!!
